Sadly I got the outcome correct for this game which was a Crewe win, and tbph I'm not surprised. I did say in most of the previous games that saw us go top of the table, that I felt the gods were on our side, because we had so much luck and got wins where we probably weren't the better team. Well the last two games has finally seen all this come home to roost. It's as if we have carried a problem over that we have suffered for several seasons, our failure to score! I saw several of our attempts this being one of them and what the hell is this... and as the commentators said, it summed up Gills day. Amazingly somehow after losing two games we are only second on GD (joint top) imagine the gap though we could have opened up with those two games - sadly we are now getting opened up where we were previously defensively sound. I'm not really being critical of the team, more disappointed that we've undone all our hard earned work, what do we need to change to make the goals flow as some of these players have been capable of with other teams.
brb, An honest - brutally honest assessment... Gills might have players that ought to be good enough for top 3 (or 7) - but - we are too slow - hence we cannot create openings that leads to opportunities to shoot.... Even 'average' teams like Grimsby and Crewe can play with more pace - and this seems to cause problems for the Gills - problems that Gills cannot cause to opponents - because we spend most of our 68% possession going sideways, backwards or hoofball. I don't expect total success with tactics - but - the ponderous way in which Gills currently employ their tactics would be greatly enhanced if conducted with some reasonable haste.
whilst we're being brutally honest...... and seeing that there's no rush of people voting ! An edit to my previous post - I wouldn't have either Clark or Clarke in my team sheet... The 2nd Crewe goal was a result of Max Clark (( yet again )) allowing the opponent far too much time and space. Jayden Clarke - Bless him - tries ( not always hard ) - and too often only manages to tackle... himself ! ... And what's up with O'Gie ? He undoubtedly has quality - and confidence - but - too many times makes silly mistakes -- and with Crewe's first goal - following a very poor ball by Hutton - O'gie must have been favourite to prevent any danger to the Gills goal - but - he seemed to put no effort into a challenge. Nevitt's chance, late in the game was bewildering - why he took so long to realise that the easiest option ( after being 'put-through' in the penalty area ) - would have been to take a shot. ...... I suppose that I have to be thankful that the available players are 'fit'..... How long does it take Andrews ? or Dack ? Even with everyone fit Gills need to be more dynamic - quicker - both with the ball and movement off off it.
I felt guilty the game before last because I slated Jayden, yet people were selecting him in their top three....so I doubt my own judgement lol As for Ogie I wouldn't have him as a defender, he would be far better in a Akinfenwa role, I know I'm mad....as a hatter.
Putting this another way ^^ you can keep doing the same thing and getting the same results or you can be brave and do things unexpected and see if it works.
Having seen him miss plenty of sitters, no thank you. The lad needs to learn when to do just the basic and when its ok to play out, unfortunately got too much of an obsession of thinking he can waltz passed other players and leaves us exposed. There's a good player in there, but honestly you struggle to trust him at times because you don't quite know what he's going to do next.
Our current goal rate is 1.2 per game, the lowest in the top seven, if he only gets one assist in 90 mins of football it's win win He dosen't even have to move, he could just stand there and catch one as it comes over the top, because no one will be able to move him. Failing that we need a striker that can score, but I'm sure we've already tried this all of last season and ten games into this season and I'm still waiting for the gods to answer our prayers.
