Just about 18 hours after the match finished and I'm the first to post? Think that speaks volumes (again) for the performance. As usual it was a performance mostly lacking in passion, ball control and accuracy of passing, but we benefited from some dreadful finishing from Rochdale who could have been 3 up by halftime. It's hard to find 3 that stand out from the rest so, once again, the best of what was on offer :

1. Linganzi - was the best of the attacking midfield, though too often passes went astray
2. McDonald - still doesn't receive the ball in the areas that best suit him, leaving him with too much work to do in insufficient time, but made the best of the chances that came his way.
3. Fish - good to see him back and getting forward. Provides more attacking threat and better defensive understanding in the position than Davies (that's not a snipe at Davies as I think he's a good centre half, but not a right back)

1. Egan- Yet again key for us, keeping us in the game all the time. I really hope Hause is not out for a long time as it doesn't sound good about him from what Taylor said. Be a shame as him and Egan work great together.
2. Linganzi- Sounds like he played well.
3. Fish- Was between Fish and Cody but it sounds that although Cody took a while to get into the game he improved, hopefully this is just the start for him as I feel that if he can get back to his best he can be a good player at this level.

1. Bywater... 20 shots 9 on target makes Bywater one of the busiest players again.
2. Cody....... he took his goal well, just shows that if we can get the ball to him in the 6 yard box he will deliver.
3. Egan........ Mr dependable.

Wasn't at the game but listened to the game and after reading other articles I have gone for:
1. 3 points (Man of the Match) - John Egan
2. 2 points (2nd best performing player) - Amine Linganzi
3. 1 point (3rd best performing player) – Cody McDonald

Really difficult, how i didn't fall a sleep in the second half is beyond me. As itstimupnorth said Rochdale should easily have been 3-0 up maybe even four by my reckoning...so how do i pick three top players out of that performance...

1. Linganzi - saw it in the last game when he came on as sub and saw it in the is game, at least he tries to add some positive energy...or should that be flair.
2. Legge - purely because it was good to see him back
3. Fish - for the same reason as Legge

Probably the one i feel a bit guilty about leaving out is Bywater, for exactly the reasons grumpygit has stated.

I take up your point Tim, about you being the first to post 18 hours after the game. As an expat who relies on match reports/ comments from
this forum, I to have noticed this in recent weeks. Even the last time we won. (seems a long time ago now) someone even commented then
about the lack of post match posts. Also I hear reports about subdued crowds at home matches. Even though peeps like BRB & A/Right say say
they will always support regardless of Div / Manager, there seems to be a depressive air of acceptance of failure at present.
Am I right in this premise?

The answer to your question is Yes.

As Gills fans we might be 'blinkered' in our viewpoint that we have enough quality in the team. Maybe we do not - certainly not in terms of creating and scoring goals. We have scored only 4 goals in our last 8 league games. One of these was a 'breakaway'-super goal at Sheffield. 2 were in our win v Peterborough - when ( despite playing well ) we were under a lot of pressure and perhaps Posh were hard done by - as was the case for Rochdale - who were guilty of enormous wastefulness, and somehow we managed to sneak an unjustified equaliser.
I'm undecided if we do possess enough quality - to retain L1 this season - on current showing we are destined to meet Martin Allen's side next season.
I am fairly sure that our (Peter Taylor's) tactics do not help - or at least they are failing too many times for our own good. I am not the first to say that the tactics are too negative (no outlet when defending corners etc) - but if you don't score goals, you cannot expect to win games. We need to be more adventurous - yes we might lose a few games ( are we actually going to lose more than we already are ?) - but we might stand the chance to win a few more ( a win and a defeat gets you more points than (trying to & failing )to draw our games.
In those last 8 league games;
1. Coventry - (0-1) We had plenty of chances to score(missed headers) - is our quality good enough.
2. Oldham - (0-0) Poor quality football all round - only positive was that it was a point away from home.
3. Peterborough (2-1) Best game of the season - but Peterborough should have got a point. This was a 'rare' decent performance by the Gills.
4. Walsall - (0-0) What a boring game - No quality.
5. Sheffield Utd (1-2) We nearly stole the points despite being battered all game - but true to form we managed to mess it up. ( we deserved nothing - even for that great goal by Norris ).
6. Notts County (0-1) Two poor teams played out a dull game. Gills were gifted a penalty - but failed to convert. ( can't score from a virtually open goal )
7. Scunthorpe - (0-3) I thought we weren't good even before Loft was red carded. After this we were disgraceful in our lack of fight.
8. Rochdale - (1-1) A very lucky point from a late goal. Rochdale could (should) have scored many more.

We cannot carry on in this vein. We need to change our tactics - because the current one are not working enough to ensure L1 football for next season. It was all very well that when Taylor came to us we needed to steady things - and the negative tactics last season just about did the job of keeping us up - but if we continue with the style of play as shown in these last 8 games we will be relegated.

......can't wait for tomorrow night - are we due a 'rare' good performance - come on Gillingham - shove my words down my throat.
