Manchester City are close to finalising a stadium naming rights deal and an agreement could be announced within a fortnight,. Two of the clubââ¬â¢s current sponsors - Aabar, an Abu Dhabi-based investment company, and Ferrostaal, a German engineering firm taken over by the Abu Dhabi government - are the favourites to be the stadium sponsor. Insiders acquainted with the negotiations believe the deal will be worth between ã10 million and ã12m a year. There is no firm agreement yet about the length of the term although it is expected to be between 10 and 15 years.

When the financial regulations are applied I can see every team trying to maximise the income from everything related to a football club. Stadium names, stand names etc will become commodities. Not every team has the ability to increase the attendance rates by building a new stadium or extending an existing one so other means and ways will have to be found to get that extra financial advantage to improve the team. Goodbye heritage and welcome a mass of corporate investment.
