Some will probably say this is a pointless thread but in light of recent stadium expansion talk - What it would look like etc; having never been there myself; I was looking at images of Sunderland's Stadium of Light and could easily see an example: Both the Northam stand and Kingsland stand could have an extra tier added to them and it if it looked anything like the Stadium of Light, it would look impressive. Plus, imagine the noise from behind the goal, it would be even more electric than it is now! please log in to view this image View from Chapel to Kingsland (ignore the tunnel) please log in to view this image View from Itchen to Northam please log in to view this image View From Kingsland to Northam please log in to view this image View From Chapel/Itchen corner
if they were to do it one just 1 stand it would have to be northam so that we could have more vocal supporters there
The suggested expansion to St Marys looks great, but material improvements would have to be to the bridge over the railway to cater for any increase in spectator numbers!!
Seems someone has changed the stadium's Wikipedia page to say it'll be expanded to 50,000 when we return to the Premier League: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Mary's_Stadium#Expansion I personally think that's bollocks. However, if it was to be expanded, I'd like the focus to be on acoustics to create a better atmosphere such as in San Mamés in Bilbao or Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. I do wish St Mary's was a slightly more intimidating place to visit.
For St Marys it should be a Southern translation and should read "Come on chaps" pronounced in the Queen's English when read aloud!
It is but not necessarily because of the stadium nor the fans. The team are currently the threat though I wouldn't say no to expansion once in the prem again.
for the record, I "sat" on several thousands seats at The Stadium of Light, raising money for Marie Curies Cancer...... we called it a sitahon, but my thighs were goosed at the end!
If we were ever to increase our capacity we would move to a new out of city super stadium and leave the Budget SMS. Plans have been drawn up for this already as Cortese dosnt like SMS as is was built on the cheap and would not make finacial sense to expand.
Let's 1) get to PL and 2) fill SMS first. It will be a long time before a new stadium is warranted. Remember Cortese will not take risks with our financial stability.
Moving to another stadium would be a complete waste of money. The stadium has superb facilities and it is one of only a handful of UEFA 4 star stadiums in Europe. So what if it doesn't look like the Sapporo Dome or something, it is an excellent stadium regardless.
Am I the only one who absoloutly loves signal iduna park, seems like it would be so intimidating to play at, steep sided and that main stand behind the goal, all standing at 28,000. Love the look of that ground just looks like it has kept being added to as BVB got bigger and that is the case would love something as intimidating as that, on a smaller scale obviously.
