Can't see us getting what we paid on the basis of half a dozen games, so it's sign or have a year in the reserves as far as I'm concerned.

I don't get that though Sid,

Continue to pay him a fortune in the reserves and let him go for nowt next summer?

Or get what we can now, when his end of season form has inflated his price, free up his wages and get someone else in?

    Plan B for me.

Aye, he's still only 21 so we will be due compensation at a tribunal. I'm not sure how the price is worked out to be honest but the figures that are going about is about 6-7 million. Not bad

I always have the feeling that Whickham thinks he is a better player then he really is. He's probably thinking that 6 good games at Sunderland is now a stepping stone to the big time and full England caps. Maybe we won't offer him enough to piss it up on a new hair cut, tattoo's or expensive champagne. Get rid and buy a competent and more professional player. ****ing annoys me second rate players holding clubs to ransom... Poyet please move on before it's too late.

    JONATHAN SORIANO!!!

I thought tribunal fees came to about 50p. If it's 6-7 million, fair enough....but a bloody expensive reserve team player absorbing close to 2 million in wages.

I see he's prolific in the Austrian league... Wouldn't dare want us to bring somebody from that league in. He's got no premier league experience and couldn't cut it at Espanyol when he tried the big boys league. No thanks.

I have doubts over his attitude. Strikes me as a big time Charlie, when he should be knuckling down and getting ready to make a real, consistent effort this season if he wants to be taken seriously.

Flip side is prior to Gus, he was managed poorly. Although I still think his attitude had something to do with that.

All the pissing about is de-stabilizing, which is née good. Also, his hair is slightly ginger which is never a good thing.

The professional game's method for determining the amount of compensation payable for training and development of players under the age of 24 is through the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC). The PFCC is incorporated under the rules of both The Football League and Premier League, and forms part of the collective bargaining agreement with the Professional Footballers' Association.

The PFCC comprises of an independent Chairman, appointees from The Football League and Premier League (as appropriate), an appointee of The Professional Footballers' Association and an appointee of the League Managers' Association.

PFCC hearings take place on an agreed date with each club required to provide evidence to support their valuation of the player in question. In making its judgment the committee will take into account the costs of both clubs in operating a Football Academy or Centre of Excellence, as well as the age and playing record of the player, the length of time he was registered with his original club, the terms offered by both clubs, the status of the two clubs, the substantiated interest shown by other clubs in acquiring the registration of the player and any amounts paid by the original club to acquire the player in the first place.

Unlike FIFA's formulaic approach, this domestic process allows for greater flexibility in setting the level of compensation according to the merits of each individual case. In deciding on a compensation figure, it is not uncommon for the PFCC to set fees that build as the player becomes more established at first team level. Recent cases have seen clubs receive a basic compensation fee with further payments becoming due on the player's debut, following a certain numbers of first-team appearances and after international appearances. It is also usual for there to be a sell-on fee should the player be sold at a profit at any point in the future.

If you check his overall record i think he was the leading scorer in the Europa league last season (11 goals and 4 assists in 9 games incl 3 v ajax). Before going to Austria he hit 54 in 79 for Barcelona 'b' and scored regularly for the Spanish National Junior teams. This season already he has scored 7 in 3 appearances incl 1 in the champions league.

I think it's not only his goalscoring record that you need to look at but the number of assists. Last season 43 games, 48 goals and 23 assists.

Granted he had a rough time at Espanyol but his record since then (albeit in lower leagues) is unbelievable.

Then again your probably right we'll stick with Whickham, Graham and Altidore. (combined cost?)

You keep talking about him like he's a proven quantity - I've never heard of him. He could be another Altidore? Or Danny Graham? He could easily come over here and struggle. I rate Wickham - always have. English, 21 year old CF (and his age is something that a lot of people forget - they all act like he's acting like a spoilt brat and he's 25 or something). I saw him mature in a matter of weeks when he was recalled from loan. Even Poyet said he'd matured and he'd seen a change in his attitude.

I'd rather keep Wickham than risk Soriano personally

IS this the same Barcelona 'B' that Arnau "can;t get a game as I'm rubbish" Riera played for? Oh well sign him then!

Austrian league - not as good as the SPL - we might as well sign Anthony Stokes back using your rationale. Soriano would be a much bigger risk than giving Wickham £42k that he is apparently asking for and, as I say, could (and probably would) end up being no good at all in this league.

And using the europa league is also pointless as it's around 15 games against nobody and 3 games against the big boys reserve side.
