Jonas Gutierrez claims fellow Argentine Fabricio Coloccini would be happy to follow his lead and sign a contract extension at Newcastle.

Gutierrez has penned a new four-year deal with the Magpies, committing his long-term future to the club.

It is claimed that Coloccini could be next to sign on, with fresh terms set to be discussed.

The Newcastle skipper still has two years left to run on his current deal, but talks are planned.

The South American has made his affection for the club clear in the past and Gutierrez believes he would not need much convincing to prolong his stay.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "Colo and I love life at Newcastle and want to spend our best years here.

"Since Newcastle returned to the Premier League, Colo has been in great form. This wasn't a surprise for me because I played against him many times in La Liga when he was at Depor and I was at Real Mallorca.

"He is a very important player for us. He is doing really well as captain and he has a big experience of playing in first-class matches."
    Competition

Gutierrez has helped Newcastle get off to a flying start in the 2011/12 campaign, with Alan Pardew's side yet to taste defeat.

The Argentina international is taking nothing for granted, though, and insists he has embraced the added competition for places that now exists at St James' Park.

He said: "It's okay, I never care about competition for place, it is good for football.

"Everywhere I have played I have done so with competition. I always do my best, and competition is also good for other players.

"I have the opportunity to do my best from the start of the season. I hope that I am prepared for that but we must find good results as well."

  4. Hope he accepts a pay cut though, to at least 60k a week which I'm sure he will.

I think he likes it here, and he's got the captains arm band now, his BFF is here, and he's also approaching 30.

    I'd offer him a 3 year contract with an option of a 4th <ok>

He is going to have to, there is no way we can continue to pay him the reported 80k - he won't get it elsewhere, he seems settled and he is a fans favorite...Makes far too much sense for him not to!

35kpw+25k appearance bonus? gives him a nice wage whilst he's still 1st choice, at the same guarding against another Smith situation.

Yeah, I think basic wages with appearance incentives is the way forward.

If he's on 80k a week for 2 years, maybe something like 60k for 3 years or 50k for 4 years would be ideal. Security/Financial compromise?

I think we should break the "wage cap" for Colo. 60k would be ideal as we are getting rid of Smith at the end of the season anyway!!!

I'd like to think as a seasoned pro he's got a tad more character than Carroll and Enrique.

Hope he signs on and finishes his career here. He's turned into a class defender and him and Taylor are creating a brilliant CB pairing.

If Colo signs, then we're definitely going in the right direction.

Yep. We've only recently given him the honour of being a prominent face on the banner.

Exactly. He's captain, hes vital to our defence and would be taking a wage cut still. <ok>

Personally, I don't think the wage cap should be broken for anyone.

It's crazy to think we still have Alan 'Deadwood' Smith on 60k who I don't think even warms the bench for some games anymore!
