Interesting point raised on WHCR Hull City Fan Forums last week. Opinion was that it would be suicide to try and pick your best 11 every week for each Premier League game, and that every squad player should be utilised in the forthcoming season. But already we seem to be picking our starting 11 from Norwich from the same pool of about 13 players. When do players like Dudgeon and Prossor get the call-up?
Not sure I buy that. Sure, rotation is quite valuable to the top 4, mainly due to a lot of fixtures (Europe). But we are basically playing once a week now (much less mid-weeks than last year, where rotation wasn't too common). I think we can deal with that - play your best team.
1st off it only makes sense to utilise the new recruits. So that's already over half the team Mcgregor, Figueroa, davies, thudd, livermore, sagbo, graham. 2ndly the rest will depend on the team. I'd play rosie at RB if bruce can find a formation with elmo at LM or if he is willing to drop him. 3rdly some of these players will need to take their chances which they haven't (like tom cairney for example) in cup games or training.
In my opinion, rotation only makes sense for teams in the lower part of the table if the players who have been playing are not doing well, or the players already in the squad need resting. The teams around the top are lucky enough to have serious squad depth to constantly rotate. Look at Chelsea - they had players like Essien, Mata, Lukaku and Schurrle on the bench - players who would be in nearly every other teams' first XI.
I'm sure there'll be a lot of whinging if we see the likes of Bruce Jnr coming on/ starting. So no, we shouldn't rotate the squad unless it's for cup games.
