There have been a few threads about us buying players over the summer. I don't think people are taking into account the squad restrictions that the Premier League places on us. Twenty-five players is not a lot, and we need 8 of them to be homegrown. Essentially, selling Bendtner, Vela, Denilson, does not really do anything for us squad-wise. For those of you suggesting that we replace Walcott, Djourou and Song with overseas players, you need to put it out of your head because it is virtually impossible. I've added my assessment of whether the player gets a wage of Rookie, Squad, or Veteran, because salary seems to be a hot topic. You may disagree. The rest is pretty much fact I think. The U21 tag is for NEXT year. If you spot an error, let me know and I will update it. The bottom 5 players are this year's U21 players registered with the BPL. I imagine Park/Chamakh is now replaced by Podolski. Point is, if you want to sell/loan; Djourou, Walcott, Szczesny, Gibbs, Jenkinson, Wilshere, Ramsey, or Coquelin, you have to either drop a player from the 25 to bring in a homegrown U21 (Ox for example), or replace them with a homegrown player. bit hard to make out that table. is there a way of making it look like a table with evenly spaced columns and stuff? would be much easier to understand then.
i think veteran (V) can only really apply to players past their best days, i.e. over thirty. don't think you can put mertesacker, vermaelen, sagna, walcott or van Persie in that category. maybe you should also add another for star players (van persie, vermaelen, sagna)
I was just trying to get people thinking about salary. Obviously we coud sign Ramos for Jenkinson, but there would be a sizable knock on the wage budget. I'll let you all decide what you think players are paid.
Also I think you have got the rules slightly wrong - you do not have to have 8 home grown players in the squad (you can actually have none). The real rule is that you can have a maximum of 17 'non home grown' players in the senior squad, then add as many under 21 year olds as you like. I believe in 11/12 we actually only had a senior squad submitted of 22 players, with 5 home grown. Basically, there is no real squad issue in terms who we can sell and bring in.
you can have as many U21 players as you like, unless you are using them to meet homegrown limit, in which case they count as one of the 25. Otherwise there would be no point in having the homegrown rule. Every team would just register the local schoolboys and use them to meet the limit and then never play them. Under 21's dont count at all against the 25 man squad. We have registered less than 8 homegrown on both occassions in the last two years. There is no rule that says you have to have 8 homegrown players, only that you have to have 8 if you have a 25 man squad (excluding 21 year olds and below). Our squad could be 17 foriegn, 3 homegrown and then 6-7 under 21's (or as many as we had) could still play in the PL. In the link you posted we actually only had 19 players there counting towards the PL 25.
the rule states - "Players who turn 21 after January 1 of the season in question are eligible to play in first-team matches and do not count against the 25 man squad limit." Wilshere is 21 on the 01-Jan-2013 and so I think the word "after" is significant, although illogical.
It doesnt really matter anyway. If he is not classed as under 21, we just name him in the main squad, as there are free spaces. The are limits not directives - i.e it is up to that number.
Ok - I get what you are saying, but my point still stands. You cant drop Walcott/Song/Djourou and replace them with a non-homegrown over-21 player without dropping one of the 17 we have on our books right now.
correct. but we'll have some of those latest 17 foreign squad (which was changed in Jan) leaving anyway: Squillaci, Park, Chamakh, Henry, Mannone or Fabianski, Arshavin, Benayoun (some or all of them).
