Here's the Spurs players Goals & Assists table, updated after last night's 3-1 win over Shamrock Rovers...

...one aspect of Jermain Defoe's game which has vastly improved this season is the amount of assists he's providing.

And having 15 different players either score or assist in our first 10 matches this season shows that there are goal threats all over the park.

I know its only early in the season, but can you compare any of this to last season?

Hi PL - if you go to 6061's brilliant site, you'll see the stats for last season too.

VDV was top and Crouch was second last season in terms of goals and assists.

    Interesting stuff, 6061.
Nice to see that we're less dependant on van der Vaart's goals this season.

I have to admit, I was quite surprised to see Defoe lay off that perfect pass to Dos Santos for our third goal last night.
Winning the ball in our final third, making a 74m run and then playing someone else in is not exactly what he's known for, is it?

Defoe is looking very good this season - his stats are almost better then last season already <laugh>

And how impressive was our CL goal and assist tally last season!

Defoe already has more than twice as many assists as last season.
Maybe he's a little less selfish at the moment because he's not so worried about scoring, as he's got a few?

It's very early days yet, but in terms of vital goal contributions, Jermain Defoe is over three times better this season (one for every 56 minutes played) than his stats for last season (one for every 176 minutes played).

And Rafael van der Vaart's figures have also shown a slight improvement this season over last.

Did we sell own goals in the summer then? He did some damage against Arsenal the other week.

Absolutely incredible, Bale, 1 assist last season! <yikes>, I expect that to improve this season with Ade.

Not necessarily a worry: after his early season form most teams resorted to double marking and/or fouling Bale. The extra space created for others plus the free kicks were no doubt worth a lot of goals and assists to others.

These statistics are interesting but not the whole story

The main difference with Bale this season is that the refs have actually been doing their job.

Also with the Bale assists don't forget the strikers missed nearly every ball he put in for them.

I love stats, but they do have their limitations.

Bale being a case in point.

How many times last season did Bale dribble down the touchline, put in a cross for Crouch to knock-down and Van der Vaart to score from?

Result: A goal for VDV, an assist for Crouchie and bugger-all for Bale.

Bale probably is the biggest story the stats don't tell. He drew three yellow cards (with a red) against Liverpool, getting a man sent off and stretching their defense for Ade and VDV. I wish Redknapp--or anyone else--would start moaning about the fouling tactics used on Bale in general and Charley Adam in particular. A league that lets its most exciting players get fouled into season-ending injuries doesn't know what it's doing.
