5puds losing 5-0 to Real, for example, would have upped Spain's coefficient and murdered ours

Actually I think it only depends on which round you get to, and QFs would have been above average and so improved our coefficient.

I have been a bit knocked back by some of the bitterness from the Spurs fanbase re our win though. I only know 3 Spurs supporters and 2 were very uncharitable and 1 was so-so.

On the other hands MUFC/City/Liverpool fans who I know (11 in total) were all really happy we won - I even had one die-hard 'pool fan (signed Tommy Smith photo's all over his office) tell me he was jumping up and down and shouting for us during the pen's!

Ultimately I think this is the situation:

Spurs feel robbed - that's dumb. To be robbed you need to have had something in the first place. In any year 4th spot is tenuous until the last English team goes out. Something to get over I think.

Be fair - none of the other teams were affected negatively by your victory.

It was a nightmare watching the match as well - three times it looked like Bayern were over the line and three times Chelsea pulled something out of the fire. Well done to them.
