I'm in full agreement with this philosophy and saw it as the Pozzo way, nice to see it confirmed by the new boss and lets hope they can deliver.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19079304
I think there are some very interesting times ahead of us, hopefully all good. I hope we can get off to a positive start to the season, otherwise the trolls will be out baying for blood or at the least the head of GZ. We cannot expect too much, we need sensible targets which are achievable with our current crop. You never know there maybe futher additions to the squad as well as some people being shown the door. The fact that Dyche's early results were poor should work to Zola's advantage. A win in the Worthless Cup and generally respectable early league results should keep all but the most demanding of fans patient until November at least. I remember being asked during the September international break last season how Watford were doing, by an Arsenal fan who genuinely didn't know and was simply being polite. Now, when I'm talking to Watford fans I say things as I see them, positive or negative. But when I'm talking to fans of established Premier League clubs, me talking about Watford is a bit like Steven McGinn talking about Scotland to a bunch of Englishmen. My answer was something along the lines of "well, we convincingly won a pre-season friendly against Wealdstone."
Interesting that he was talking to BBC London 94.9 and not BBC Three Counties. A shift in emphasis? Last season we barely got a mention in the London Evening Standard whereas we have already surpassed our column inches long before a ball has been kicked in anger. If we are to be successful in the Pozzo model it does mean that we need to attract more fans from the London Boroughs as well as from our traditional catchment areas of HH and St.A etc. The net needs to be wider. How successful that is could probably depend on the Borough Council who have been none too helpful regarding planning permission, traffic congestion, parking arrangements etc, as well as the relatively poor public transport links.... my journey down from Aylesbury to the Vic is an all too depressing part of my matchday experience notwithstanding the company and generosity of my friends that I travel with. It is arguably my biggest fear about this whole new adventure: that we will be hamstrung by a continually unsupportive local authority as they have indeed been over the years regardless of club ownership. They may want to bask in the glory of success providing it doesn't mean them being inconvenienced by the additional thousands that success would undoubtedly bring.
On the plus side they did give planning permission for the new Main Stand when many thought that the objections of Liverpool Road residents would prevail. On the other hand both Watford BC and Three Rivers could have been more responsive when the old Leavesden Aerodrome site was up for grabs. There would have been plenty of space to develop a new stadium with car parks and approach roads (whatever folks think of these new stadia). Harry Potter anyone?
Opporunity missed there, I used to live close to Leavesden and always thought the airfield was a prime place for a new Vic, Vic.... Regards.
The takeover has given me new hope. Despite living a long way away I used to have a 75 miler season ticket which I gave up last season. The season before I went to about 5 games and it worked out at about £85-£95 per game. The journies home were rubbish after a poor performance and a loss. I have renewed it for this season because of hope again for this season and following seasons when tickets may be in short supply if things go well.
