Confirmation from Oldham Athletic that their pre-season friendly against Newcastle on Tuesday July 15th will be the first game played at their re-christened home of....

    SportsDirect.com Park

The League One Latics have agreed a five year deal with Mike Ashley's company to rename Boundary Park, wear kits provided by Ashley-owned brand Sondico and alter their new club shop at the stadium to a SD retail site.

Oldham confirm that Sports Direct are their new "front of shirt advertising partner", replacing Blacks (part owned by Ashley via JD Sports) who sponsored them last season.

    This.

Still, I get the appeal of advertising on a premier league club's shirts and premises... but sometimes I wonder about the logic in paying a lower league club, with a much lower turnout and zero tv exposure, for advertising space. Is this down to loopholes in tax forms? Write off a certain percentage of you profits as advertising, and less gets taken from the whole?

Here's a thought... Are there any rules/limits on how many shirts a sponsor can put a logo on?
Given the growth of Mike's empire I could see a lot more clubs with the SD logo on their shirts.
Maybe even the Sports Direct championship.

Listened on the radio last night to a radio sports presenter for Oldham area saying Oldham fans all very pleased with deal.

Main reasons seemed to be, firstly, the sponsorship money which was desperately needed and, secondly, the improved possibility of getting the young players from NUFC on loan.

Different world in the lower leagues especially from a financial point of view.

A$hley is just pure sh.t. Had to laugh at the way his board of directors ensured he got his 200m bonus pot. Previous votes required 75% of voters to agree with his reward, however, this was refused on 3 occasions. So, what happens his board reduce the number to approve to 50% and hey presto he gets in.

His dirty paws are reaching far and wide these days. If everyone benefits and is happy, I don't see the problem. The big difference between our situation and theirs is people were not happy with the prospect here.

The stadium name change would never have gone down positively here, but it went down a lot worse than it would have have otherwise because it was just one in a long line of **** ups and slaps in the fans' faces. Ashley doesn't have that history with Oldham. Not to mention we didn't actually get any sponsorship money from it, whereas at least Oldham are benefitting financially.
