Poyetâs relationship with American owner Ellis Short is fractious and unpredictable and he did give serious thought to firing Poyet after the debacle at Southampton. That would have undoubtedly been supported by Sunderlandâs chief executive, Margaret Byrne, who is known to have an indifferent relationship with Poyet and finds him difficult to handle. Poyetâs relationship with Sunderlandâs Sporting Director, Lee Congerton, is also strained with Poyet frequently complaining about the lack of quality and depth to his squad. part of the article from the Independent. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-pile-misery-on-top-of-80-defeat-9818639.html A tad worrying if true
Pinch of salt. His only claims to itk knowledge has been Sterling to PSG and Toure to leave man city, both didn't happen, everything else he's written appears to have been quote fed. Need more proof or a better source for my concern.
Yes, speculative journalism. SAFC were in the bottom 3 for 25 out of 31 games under Poyet last season, and, at the end of it, Short handed him a two-year contract. I doubt that the same man is going to sack Poyet over one 8-0 embarrassment after one defeat in the previous seven games. It doesn't ring true to me. It would be no surprise if a South American had a bit of South American 'machismo' about him, so yes, I could see how his relations with Byrne could be iffy. I'd like some evidence of it though. I don't think Poyet's frequent complaints about the thinness and quality of the squad are aimed at Congerton. He says equally often that he has the final say on transfers. I think Poyet's complaints are about the lack of good players who want to come here, not about Congerton. Overall, I doubt this.
It could be speculative journalism, but I have to admit, the Independent is a very good paper, no known for publishing crap. I hope its not true, we simply cannot change managers every time something goes wrong. We now a manager who, given time a little backing, could give us a team and a style of play we can be proud of, but I fear the worst for Gus.....Ellis's trigger finger seems a little twitchy right now.
Maybe they are just putting their own spin on this story? http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/281550-Poyet-admits-his-job-might-have-been-in-jeopardy
I have a lot of sympathy with this, flanders. The Independent is hardly 'a rag' is it? And, like you, I'd like a manager who can 'stay the distance' without getting us relegated. And yet, I have noticed this last year or so that Ellis is putting his foot down a bit, particularly on blowing millions on no results. I, like you, suspect he's getting sicker and sicker of English so-called 'football men' giving him advice that leads nowhere. I don't know what Bill Bradley is doing at the moment, but I could see more American management and administration coming in here. I wouldn't necessarily object to that - I've been waiting since 1957 for a management that likes results for their money. And I really, really, really like this guy Short. I'm a fan.
Put yourself in Short's shoes right now given our recent history of him making decisions and spending millions based on advice from people so called steeped in football. Through them we have avoided relegation two seasons running by the width of a *** paper when he could compare the situation to Palace who appointed Pulis and fought their clear sooner, then also to Derby who appointed McClaren and they missed promotion by a whisker and in both cases with no little or no outlay or change of players. He has backed each manager in turn with not much to show for it league or performance wise, I imagine he will not suffer fools or complainers gladly so he has every right to ask the tough questions on what direction our current management is taking us.
Another change of manager would be disastrous imo. Ellis needs to give his head a shake & get rid of that Irish bitch Byrne who is obviously way out of her depth. Neither use nor ****ing ornament her.
To talk about yet another management change, which would be a 6th in 8 years (not including Bally as caretaker) would be a complete disaster at this moment. However, if we are still bottom 3 at Christmas then I fully expect the big question will be asked in earnest by a good many more fans not just the owner. Gus is under massive scrutiny right now and 8-0 defeats like last week and comical defending like yesterday will only make that scrutiny mount. The manager desperately needs a couple of decent performances now and a few wins to take the spotlight off him but a few more straight defeats or sloppy performances and quite rightly questions will arise. I am a huge supporter of Gus but after the O'Neill fiasco, not blindly this time.
This sort of bullshit will always happen to a struggling team, manager, they've got no one else to pick on so lets go after an easy target. Total BOLLOCKS. I can't see Ellis Short handing out a new contract to a bloke he doesn't believe in.
We're not bottom 3, not at the time of my posting here or the time of yours. Don't see the need to put us below the Mags when we're not. It may change today but it's not as it stands.
We are now, unfortunately, but it was always on the cards that Newcastle would close the gap sooner or later, on the bright side there are three worse teams than either of us, so both teams should survive this year, but its going to be tight and I also have doubts about any Cup run this season, survival is the name of the game imo.
Lose the next 2 and I think the pressure will really be on. I like Gus but I have a feeling he'd jump before being pushed. All we have to do is finish above Burnley Leicester and QPR which (17th) is the absolute minimum expectation. The only way Qpr will stay up is if they get rid of Arry and bring Pulis in. I dont want to see Poyet go but if he did and we appointed Pulis we'd pretty much guarantee safety. If Poyet did go who would be the best appointment? Pulis, Moyes?
