Spanish media go mad for ‘new Roberto Carlos’ Kyle Walker

    Spurs youngster big in Spain

While we were all left drooling at consummate ease with which Spain under 21s popped the ball around against their English counterparts, the Spanish media did manage to spot something they envied in the opposition ranks: Kyle Walker.

The Tottenham full-back was undoubtedly England’s best player on the night and his thrusting runs – the last of which led to the Three Lions’ equaliser – caught the imagination of the Spaniards as they dubbed him the new Roberto Carlos.

Walker said: “It’s not a bad compliment is it? I’m flattered and it shows I must be doing something right. But I can’t afford to get too carried away because I’ve got a job to do.”

He told The Sun it was unusual to find himself with two markers for England’s second match against Ukraine after his impressive opener.

He said: “They tried to do a job on me, it was a bit different. I normally mark the wingers not the other way round.

“It was flattering but a bit frustrating as well. It’s something we’ll have to deal with. It’s a team game and it can’t all revolve around a right-back getting forward.”
