Southampton will make Millwall midfielder James Henry their number one target as they to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after his move to Arsenal. Oxlade-Chamberlain's long touted move to the Emirates appears to be nearing completion, and Saints manager Nigel Adkins does not want to be caught cold when the deal does go through. He has made former Reading trainee Henry his prime target to fill Oxlade-Chamberlain's boots. The 22-year-old is equally comfortable on the right wing or in central midfield. He played seven times for England Under-19s, and also represented Scotland Under-19s. He failed to establish himself in Reading's first-team. He joined Millwall on a permanent deal last summer after a series of loan spells away from the Royals.
If we do lose him I would like us to make a bid for Hal Robson-Kanu and try to get a loan player from the purchasing club.
Nigel Adkins - Friday July the 1st - 2011: "If Arsenal wanted to put a bid in I am sure they would put a bid in the right manner to the board and then this football club will decide what they want to go and do with that bid if it is offered." How can the deal be nearing completion within the space of 2 days?
Adkins also said that Chamberlain loves it at the club, so he might not go even if he is offered a contract at Arsenal, although that is probably blinding optimism!
Could see us maybe moving for him anyway in some sort of deal involving Puncheon? Did well at Millwall when on loan there last season
If we want Henry to replace AOC we need to sign him before AOC leaves. after that transfer the price of any player we go for will double (which may be why its a bit surprising that we haven't done more business yet).
Umm if I was a manager/chairman of another club and we came sniffing around for a right winger from that club, I would be thinking as the manager/chairman of that club "why would Southampton want this player unless they are selling Chamberlain?" This would therefore put the price up anyway
Probably true, but I doubt Henry thinks the sun shines out of his arse. I'd be happy to bring him in if Puncheon went the other way.
Tbf you're right to an extent, but I still think we'll get a better deal before we sell AOC than after. Anyway, we could always argue we just wanted Henry as back up, because at the moment we don't really have any cover out wide.
We have all been told many times that the only genuine news will come officially through the club .I for one one would not wipe my arse with the newsprint of your average national news paper.Be patient and all will be revealed in due course Nigel gave us a fairly good update on things as they stand right now which was good considering they have just returned to business.Ithink we are lucky as i dont think we get any bull from our owners like some other clubs long may it continue
You could tell that on his 1st interview NA was already pissed off with filtering questions about Alex Chamberlain. It's boring, but until it's on the Official site and from the mouth of Adkins or Cortese it's just speculation and since the arrival of Cortese I have never been let down by what he says and the facts. The message from the Adkins interview was very clear. Southampton do not want to or have to sell Alex Chamberlain, it's as simple as that. The only person who can change that is Alex himself and if he doesn't want to play for Southampton then that's his decision, we collect our cheque and move on
Brilliant. The day after Adkins says no bid has been made for AOC the NOTW say he is on his way to Arsenal and we already have a replacement lined up. Either the NOTW are saying Adkins is lying or they or just stupid - no guessing it's the latter.
