woolcombe i was referrng to the mistake in the article that says the fine is $79million australian dollars.

if your wanting to discuss the merits of the fine and ban, i think it is disgusting. £55,000 fine and a 5 day ban for whiping a horse 1 extra time? shockingly draconian punishment for a minor offence, to easy to say he knew the rules. He's a foriegn jockey in a group 1 race, and only riding his second race here under the new whip rules.

These rules should have been trialed over the winter AW racing not in the week leading up to, and on the day of british racings biggest day. I dreaded to think how the NH rules are going to have an affect when that starts proper. 3m+ on winter ground and the jockey is only allowed 8 whips for the full race, not a chance.

I totally sympathise with Soumillon. The new rules are a joke and there is no way he was abusing that horse today. I expect changes to the rules and the penalties in the very near future.

please note that this article was not posted on the merits of Soumillons fine or ban, it was to highlight the $79 million error <laugh>

<laugh> still cant believe the error in the article $79million, what was the prize money like if the fine is £79million <laugh>

The fine is absolutely ludicrous. Whilst Soumillon is a big name jockey, £55,000 is going to be a fairly hefty part of his annual income. They are not paid like footballers and the punishment, particularly the financial in this case is far in excess of the crime committed. I am quite sure that they will be changed very shortly.

Apparently the strike for Monday has not be cancelled, just delayed pending the outcome of talks in the morning.

Not just North America any more Hardy - major European banks facing massive write-offs if Greece default. And that could be the tip of the iceberg - Spain, Italy, who else????

oddy in my opinion they have to written off, in europe at least(i'm sure the chinese will never write off the american debt they hold), the amounts of these debts cannot be repaid, if we continue with the bailouts and repayments its just goin to be a vicous circle. There needs major restructing of world financial institutions if not the top guys will continue to cream off the top as they are doing now.

The euro needs to go as well, and another point the greeks should be expelled from the euro given the fact it is now coming to light that they fiddled their balance sheet to get into it - and if the bailout funding continue they need to sort out their own in house taxing system before they get anymore bailout how can they not be held to account when it is a fact that 95% of their population fiddles their taxes. Do you know that less than 5000 greeks claim to make more than 100k a year, that is fact <laugh>

Hardy that's clear but if you know that and I know that why the hell are major banks lending them millions? Suely they must perform risk assessments on these kinds of loans? Greed, greed and more greed - more risk to make a bigger return. And when it all goes pear-shaped the banks go running to the governments and say "you'd better bail us out otherwise the financial system will collapse" <doh><doh><doh>

Interesting thought on the Soumillon fine - the fact that the whole share of the prize money is withheld would indicate it is worse to give a group 1 animal an extra slap (since he's docked 50 grand) than Richard Hughes offence the other night when he was docked a couple of hundred quid. Totally nonsensical <doh>

surely the stewards should be able to see that the jockeys might get carried away, for want of a better word, when riding in a group race - and as such there is more chance of the jockey forgeting the whip rule after all there is far more at stake.

Like i said above if we think these rules are ridiculous now, wait until the 3m+ races in winter ground when the jockey can only whip 8 times theres going to be some ragin punters - more so that usual <laugh>

Another angle to this new rule is, how easy will it to get a horse a good handicap mark because potentially the trainer and jockey can use the rule to his advantage and not get done under thr non trier rule

I backed So You Think so as far as i am concerned a 79 miilion fine is not enough.

NB - I know it made no difference to the outcome.

I backed SYT to win and Midday EW so as far as i'm concerned the winner should be chucked out. It's a bleeding disgrace that he wasn't.

Imagine what would have happened if both Rewilding and Cirrus des Aigles had be rubbed out? <whistle>

It does seem that it's only the jockey who's copping it in the pocket. Fair enough?

I heard Christophe Soumillon interviewed on Radio 5Live's "Sports Week" on Sunday morning and, having been docked his £52,000 share of the prize money, he was not unsurprisingly very supportive of Richard Hughes stance regarding the new whip rules.

Go down to you local bookies next Saturday and mention the Champion Stakes and most people will not remember the name of the French gelding that won the race but they will all remember the jockey getting done. Great publicity for the sport.

What a brilliant idea it was to change the whip rules the week before the big showpiece fixture and give the jockeys no chance to adapt - even if some of us think that the new rules are a complete joke. They should have said it will be 1st January 2012 and given all the jockeys notice to adjust by having an enquiry and pointing out to them when they transgressed. It would also have given them a chance to adjust the rules when they realised how unworkable they have made them.

As for the Aus$79 million, I did not realise that their currency had become so worthless so quickly. Do their banks all own Greek debt?
