I've just been watching some of the TV coverage of this momentous event and found it incredibly moving.
Just to try and put it some sort of perspective, roughly 2½ times the average Carrow Road crowd were killed or injured on that first day!!! <cry>
 
My Grandfather fought in the Great War and was one of the lucky ones who came back. Never talked about it to anyone, one can only imagine the horror. These youngsters who have been slagging off many of the older generation for voting Brexit should remember that they wouldn't even be here today if it wasn't for our forefathers who took up arms against incredible odds for freedom

RIP To those very brave men who had no choice but to fight as they would have been shot at dawn for cowardice if they refused.

Well said Rich, even my generation have no real idea of their suffering.

They make me proud!

If you ever get a chance, visit the Memorial Arboretum at Arlewas not far from Tamworth and there is an area dedicated to those who were indeed shot for cowardice!!!

Agree with the general sentiment but I don't think that anyone has criticised WW1 veterans for voting us out of Europe. Baby boomers on the other hand....

Exactly - utmost respect to all those who fought in WW1 and I'm fairly certain that none of the survivors are still alive, but I'm sure the generation that followed and the one after that .........

There are still many still alive today who fought in WW2 for the same principles and millions more that lived through the horrors of war at home. Leave your snide comments for the Brexit thread and show some respect.

Erm KIO you don't have to look to far up the thread to see which of us brought this up in this thread. Or you could just look in a mirror? Read your own post. Read mine. Cheap opener snide response maybe but jumping on your high horse about posting my point on the wrong thread is just a tad hypocritical don't you think? I think you'll find there are surprisingly few WW2 vets left as well and certainly not enough to tip a vote. I have now said on two threads baby boomers. I presume you understand that this refers to those born during and post war but just for utter clarity I am not referring to WW1 or 2 vets.

Baby Boomers were the generation that resulted from the return of servicemen from WW2. Generally it is accepted to be those born between 1946 and about 1960.
 
Sorry to be so positive but I am convinced that if they could see they quality of life that their sacrifice in part made possible for us and our kids and their own descendants they would be immeasurably proud of themselves and pleased for us.

Even the worst off in our society have hugely better life chances than those who grew up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. No way are things perfect but if anyone doesn't think they are better and will continue to get better then they should go to the library and browse through the history section.

Excellent points Norfolkbhoy. I guess my post related to the general deterioration in standards, personal behaviour and decency. Common courtesy is failing badly, people do not help their neighbours like they used to, in fact I bet there are many who wouldn't even recognise their neighbours if they saw them in the street. The way that cars are driven, the average size of a Brit today, the way that we have no respect left for authority (Police, MP's etc) - I have to say that these groups have brought it on themselves but compare a TV interview today with one 40 or 50 years ago and the lack of respect is startling. To know that our whole society is fundamentally corrupt with those with huge amounts of money effectively swindling the less well off by hiding their funds offshore and not paying their whack. that was what I meant and reflected on the loss of life at The Somme.
