Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones drafted in by Liverpool

Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones have been drafted in by the manager Brendan Rodgers to help coach Liverpool's young players.

The former first-team players are to assist the Under-21 and Under-18 squads at the Kirkby academy.

"It's great to have Robbie, Steve and Rob on board," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. "I wanted to get more former players involved and over the off-season I spoke to a number of them about a possible role here.

"For me it's so important to have players like that around. These are players who the young guys look up to. The three of them have come in recently and I know they have thoroughly enjoyed having that involvement of working with the kids.

"We're starting with the older academy players as they are ones they can really affect at this moment. It's both coaching and mentoring."

The manager has spoken previously about wanting to utilise the experience of the recently retired Jamie Carragher, who has opted for a career in television.

Rodgers has immersed himself in the club's history since arriving in the summer of 2012 and will continue to do so. "Sometimes managers feel the need to distance themselves from players like that but I love what this institution is all about at Liverpool," he added.

"It's important to retain that connection with the history of the club. I want to protect that great history to ensure these players get the opportunity to be involved at a club they love."

I read Bryan Hughes is doing his badges. Seems ideal to be doing this. Any others?

I'm not sure Fowler, McManaman and Jones have much in common with City.

Well Fowler, McManaman & Jones were all top class players, Brian Hughes isn't really in that same boat IMO. I like the idea, but it'd really need to be players who wider top class, Windass, Okocha, Geovanni & Barmby spring to mind. I know Barmby won't be even considered even if this happened here, but the kids need people who can help them improve & Hughes wasn't really that type of player IMO.

Bryan Hughes? Mr Softie? I'd much rather have Ashbee...at least he could teach them how to tackle. Who's next....Junior Lewis....Olofinjana????

Ye Mcmanaman and Fowler were known for their crunching tackles wernt they!!
I mentioned Hughes as I had read he was doing his badges and still lives in the area.

Dawson would have been a candidate but wanted to carry on playing. Ash has no inclination to coach, if he did i would have him in like a shot.

Just because a player wasn't a great player doesn't mean he won't be a great coach.

AVB and Mourinho barely had a pro career, but there top coaches.

How many Premier League managers where top class players?

Deano as a finishing coach would be a great shout. I think Dukey would be a great mentor for some of our youger keepers, especially Cracknell (I saw him warming up with the first team and he's come on in leaps and bounds since I saw him for the reserves last season).

    Laudrup is the standout one.

    Brucey and Hughes as well.

Lambert had a pretty decent career didn't he? Champions League winner and all that...

Quite a few. Bruce, Hughes, Clarke, Hughton, Laudrup, Mackay, Pochettino... I probably missed one or two..

Certainly Laudrup, from then on it depends on how top class we're talking, our Steve wasn't a bad centre-half.

I know we all like to look back through rose tinted glasses but I think one of the main reasons for our success are the new dynamic forces at play.
I seriously fancied us to get "something" from the Hammers and Villa games.Traditional thinking on my part. The new blood seems to think we have a right to go for all 6 points.
    I like it !
I would not use any ex players unless they could add real quality to the mix.
Hopefully accepting mediocrity is a thing of the past
