    Dear Diary,

It's bloody crowded in this house, surely there could have been other hiding places in Amsterdam? I'm not even convinced "Uncle" Huthy is actually Jewish and he keeps on "accidentally" letting the blanket used to divide the rooms slip down just when he is washing his special place. I have seen him looking at me in a strange way. Night night and speak to you you tomorrow.

    Dear Diary,

Not sure where Mr Gambolski got the vodka from but he had a terrible time of it last night. By the shouting and screaming from Mama and the over powering smell I think he made stool on the Leiberman's sofa. He'll have a hard time shifting that stain off. Nighty night.

    Dear Diary,

The Catholics in the loft next to us were found hiding last night. It is such a shame as the McGinty family were so nice to us. Mrs McGinty (we used to call her Nanny Tina) was captured by the German soldiers on her way out to buy some bread, we heard the scuffle outside our window and she was up against the wall being frisked. I know I am only 13 but from where I was watching it looked like she was enjoying it. I could hear one of the German soldiers shouting at her and that she was easy to spot because of her bright red hair.

As Mrs McGinty and the rest of her Catholic family were dragged away I could clearly hear her shouting "You blue nosed fascist b*stards are all a bunch of F*cking Huns!" Not sure what that means but I'm sure I heard that big brute Colonel Mendes shout back something about not surrendering.

Never a dull moment eh diary?

    Dear Diary,

Living in the loft has become very difficult lately and some of the families were getting anxious about their long term future. Then a miracle happened! One of our most trusted neighbours, Mr Whyte, promised to get us all boat tickets to take us to America but we all had to give him our life savings because he said the tickets were so expensive. Mr Whyte kept telling us that soon we would all be in the promised land and all our dreams would come true. This was a few weeks ago and nobody has seen Mr Whyte since he left with a suitcase full of our cash.

I don't know what a Schmuck is but that is what Papa thinks of Mr Whyte.

    Dear Diary,

Some of the men folk got hold of some postcards of naked Jewish ladies and have been passing them round and asking each other "Yid We?"

Not sure what they mean and still don't know what a 'growler' is.

    Dear Diary,

Oi Vey! Where on earth have all my knickers gone? I mean seriously, there are only 4 rooms in this loft and I've only got one drawer for clothes but I'm down to my last two pairs of scants, Lord only knows where they could have got to. I have heard a lot of sniffing and groaning from young Toby Pervoski in the room next door and the disappearance of my underwear has mysteriously coincided with a lack of tissue paper. Curioser and curioser.

I have decided I shall take up Hide'n'Seek professionally when the war is over. I am just so very good at it.

    Dear Diary,

Sorry it has been so long but I ran out of ink for my pen and things are really getting tight round here since that bastard Mr Whyte ran off with all our savings. We have been starving lately, Papa had to sell one of his kidneys to be able to afford food. How ironic that the only thing they had left at the butchers was kidneys.

The Goldbergs next door had their gas cut off by the German soldiers, when Mr Goldberg went to complain they took him away and said not to worry as there would be plenty of gas where he was going. I wonder if he is being taken to a bakery?

Mr Maltesevich made us all change rooms and promise each other that we'd get along after a rather heated discussion last night on the pros and cons of a republic vs a monarchy. He threatened to go and retrieve Mr Stam from the red light district to whip us into shape if we didn't agree. The last time Mr Stam got involved was when Grandpa Erry and Mr Gambolski had to be pulled apart after things turned ugly. I don't think it is right beating a poor defenceless old man but I'd make an exeption in Erry's case as he is what Toby Pervoski calls a "nonce" and what I took to be an involuntary spasm under his tartan blanket when I am having a bath turns out to be him trying to coax his shrivelled gentlemen's parts into action. Still, makes a change from his snoring and spilling his dinner down himself.
