I just haven't missed going to the games. I've missed the craic with my Dad and the lads around me, but I haven't missed the football. I'm gutted about that! Still love the club and support them every inch, but this is sadly where I am with SAFC at the minute!
Oh I have mate. Even in crisis I get giddy excitement for going to the match, even as I age. I do miss the craic and banter, emphasised by lockdown, but I can’t wait to walk up the access ramp and see the place open up in front of me again. I love that moment.
I'm not saying that it won't excite me again when it starts again, but I just haven't had any thoughts on a Saturday of "oh I miss the match"!! I may be in a minority and you know how optimistic I am (rose tinted doesn't come close!)
Aye I think even when the PL kicks off next week we will start to realise what we been missing. Seville derby tonight on Premier Sports (free for a month if you have Sky)
Is it a "Cancel the subscription and we won't charge you" deal? I always forget to cancel!! Got BT Sports using the app on my Samsung TV and my in-laws' account which is tremendous! Although a little behind so I have to hide my phone as the goal alerts normally appear 30 seconds before the goal is shown!! Been watching Bundesliga and it's been strange!!
Yeah you can sign up and immediately cancel though, I’ve already done it. It’s only £5.99 month anyway but I’ll consider having it next season if I wanna pay.
Might have a go then! It bit me in the arse in the older internet days of PPV porn!!! Got a £62 bill one month cos I forgot to cancel the free subscription!!
In 2007 I took up the opportunity to emigrate to Australia. Still here 13 years later. It was on a scheme where some of the police forces here actively recruited serving British cops. During the process I would hear the same things from colleagues along the lines of “I’d love to do it but I’d miss the football/sport too much.” I really couldn’t fathom why football was so important to them. Even more so when you consider that I worked in a provincial town in the East Midlands where the local league team floated between league one and league two. Back then I loved the game. I played five a side most weeks, I played for the force team in a local league and SSN on a Saturday afternoon was required viewing when I wasn’t working, but even with all of that I didn’t let it rule my life.
I haven't missed it much at all, but then I've been on furlough, I'll probably miss it more when I'm working all week since it was normally the thing I looked forward to. It's definitely the social side I've missed slightly more than the football mind, I don't get to go out for long on match day since we had the bairn but I normally get a pint or two before and the same after and I enjoy that, having a bit crack and watching the televised games. It's amazing how little you miss it mind, and it's another reason why the season card thing was so stupid, convince people to keep their direct debits running and they'll keep going out of habit, now they've convinced so many to cancel it'll be bloody hard to get a lot of them back.
I miss the normality in everyday life more, without question. Nice bit scran in a restaurant, excuse to do hair and hoy a shirt on, watch folk go by. The little things, the little human interactions, that’s what I’ve struggled with more than anything. I’m a sociable being, albeit within my circle, and I’ve hated the isolation.
Moved to Melbourne 5 years ago and not having that huge subject to connect with people about is ****ing gutting to this day. I don't even consider myself a huge fan but in England it's a subject of worship and a common language that I haven't found with people over here on any level like it. Aussie rules was on the TV tonight. It was like watching my dear, senile grandad try to do a jigsaw.
Only because you’re not ‘invested’ in a AFL team. Me neither for that matter. I’ve been to one AFL game here in the entire 13 years. I can see the attraction but it’s not for me. One thing that is good about it is none of the players fake injuries which is prevalent in football. If I want to talk football, which most of the time I don’t these days, then there are still plenty of people I can do that with. For me at least, I think I’ve lost interest in the game in general but still support the club of the town I grew up in. Even though I have few relatives living in Sunderland any more, as a family we still visit every time we go back to England and we always time it around a home match.
I must admit I wasn't missing it but I am now and would love to go to the match. The worst thing about it is that I can't see L1 restarting until fans return. The reasons for ending this season remain for the start of the next season.
Because I live abroad I don't get to many games these days, but this is a great post and I would imagine it reflects the feel a good number of fans are feeling about our club right now
I think it'll start. They'll need to have some players in their squads and before long they won't be able to furlough them, so simply mothballing the season would still see them going out of business. At least if they play they'll get some sort of revenue (the small TV money could be paid, they'd start getting some from those renewing season cards / paying for streams, presumably next seasons shirt sponsors and the likes won't be paying until the season has a start date). Most clubs will also have been able to get rid of quite a lot of players given the propensity for short contracts in this league, and new signings will be on lower deals. Playing on wouldn't have seen much additional revenue, so I think next season will be easier to start than this one was to finish. It is a worry mind, typical we'd be stranded here right at the worst time
