there are top players in lower leagues that can score for fun and wouldn't cost the earth and wouldn't demand silly wages. So why don't the premier league clubs ever give them a chance instead of splashing out millions on prima donnas with ego's as big as their pay packets? Very rarely do you see a prem club taking someone on from league 2 or lower. It always has to be a big name with a big price tag. I'd prefer an unknown that can score than the likes of someone like Jones for 8 mill that couldn't score in a brothel with a grand in his back pocket! Tony get some scouts in the lower leagues looking for fresh young talent!
Would love us to try for that Jordan Rhodes from Huddersfield, sounds a cracking prospect, plus where has the Austin bloke who scored loads for Swindon gone, he seems a good finisher, might've been worth a punt to get him.
Waddo I've thought about this too! As things stand right now with Stoke anyway. Not even Ric looks like he's that interested. It does beg the question. IF we signed a lower league player I'm sure they would bust a gut to impress. Let's face it both Jones and Ric don't have too. That's what anoys me with K.J. he strolls around like it's a Sunday park kickabout FF Sake. At least Tuncay sorry to bring that up again and, too some extent Ric will chase a lost cause. I can't remember the last time I saw Jones do that? There a a few very good strikers in the lower leagues. And, Ben Marshall, I've seen him before the went out on loan. If I was Pulis. I would get him back here and let him loose, so too Louis Moult. Can't be any worse than Monday surly?
This is very true, there are bundles of untapped talent in the lower leagues and also overseas. Sadly though unless Steve Bruce is ready to sell we won't be buying.
I think a big part is they are not proven at this level and fear of getting it wrong and paying with their job.
Jowler if we spent say a few hundred thousand on a lower league player on a short term contract for a reasonable wage then surely that has to be better business than 8 mill for someone that under performs on massive wages. It must be worth the gamble and I can't see why we haven't done this yet. To me it's like a second hand car, you only get shut if it's no good! I'm hoping this Summer we have a right good clean out at the Brit with a lot of the hangers on and deadwood removed and some fresh blood brought in that can actually perform!
I think the Premier League is often a step too far for these players. I'm trying to think of someone who has come from a lower league and been an instant success, but all I can think of is Jon Stead.
Dale Jennings - Trenmere Rovers Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (obviously the exception) - Southampton Jordan Rhodes - Huddersfield Town Alex Smithies - Huddersfield Town Anthony Pilkington - Huddersfield Town Mark Beevers - Sheffield Wednesday Just to name but a few and that's mainly in League One and Two.
peadar, Beckford and DJ Campbell came through the lower leagues to prem success! I think given the right coaching we could bring more of these players on instead of keep opting for the big name, (big fee), signings. Every clubs fans want to see that big elusive name donning their teams colours, but to me if he is Joe Nobody and banging the ball in the net sooner or later he will be the next big name at a good price paid for him! I would like to see Louis Moult have a run too because the few minutes he played against Sunderland away last season he looked very good to me.
Waddo You forgot Ben Foster, Ian Wright and also David Bell. I saw David play when he was at Rushden and Diamonds, always knew he'd be able to compete at the top and isn't doing a bad job with Coventry.
