Can we have a passionate debate about the club we all love without ..

    name calling,
assuming I am right and all you are wrong
I know everything and you know nothing.
    based on facts.

We can, good, then let me give a very honest outline of me and why I think like I do.

Some will say I lack ambition, I accept what is thrown at me by the club, I bury my head in the sand.

I would say I try to be realist, I accept there is a lot I can do nothing about, I accept I support Sunderland and all the downside it brings.

When I see us on a bad run, missing out on a top 6 place, selling out best young players it all leaves me with a feeling of, oh well, we are Sunderland. When I see us going after Gibson, Oshea and Brown I am happy, when I read that 2 may not want to come, I’m not surprised.

I think Sunderland is one of the biggest and best clubs in the EPL, I know that most outside of Sunderland don’t. It pains me to say it but I know the football world see Newcastle to be a bigger and more attractive option than us.

If we put on a good show against the top teams and finish around 10th I will be happy, I don’t expect to be a top 6 club, I’m sure this is depressing reading, I don’t feel cock a hoop writing it.

Maybe after all these years of following my team I have given up, just expect what we get and am just happy to enjoy a good day out and some good banter with you lot, maybe I’m like the club, to ****ing old to change.

Its for all these reasons that I can accept Bruce, a man who IMHO cares like I do and is doing his best. Its why I love Bardsley and want him in my team, he gives his all. Maybe its why I love Gyan but cant get used to him playing for us and half expect him and Sess to leave.

Its why I hate the Bruce out shouts because he is keeping us in the prem and I’m scared of risking that.

Its why I hope the younger fans can get us out of my mindset, cant see it in my lifetime but you never know.

Sorry if I have depressed you all.

On a bit of a Pulp kick at the moment. This is for you Syd.

    Help the aged,
One time they were just like you,
Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue.
    Help the aged,
Don't just put them in a home,
Can't have much fun in there all on their own.

Give a hand, if you can,
Try and help them to unwind.
Give them hope & give them comfort 'cos they're running out of time.

    In the meantime we try.
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever. No big deal so give us all a feel.
Funny how it all falls away. When did you first realise?
It's time you took an older lover baby. Teach you stuff
Although he's looking rough. Funny how it all falls away.

    Help the aged
'cos one day you'll be older too you might need someone who can
Pull you through and if you look very hard
Behind the lines upon their face you may see where you are headed
And it's such a lonely place.

    You can dye your hair
But it's the one thing you can't change.
Can't run away from yourself, yourself...

Funny how it all falls away.
    So help the aged.

    Meant affectionately as always.

Syd, that's exactly how I feel. But then again, I'm a natural pessimist. If you build up your hopes you just get them dashed time and time again.
If you always think the worst the owt else is a bonus. Following SAFC is a bit like having a twat of a son, no matter how many times the bugger lets you down, you still love him dearly.

Hope I haven't depressed anyone either.

    Good God Syd. Excellent read.
You just summed up what I guess most or us feel but never really consciously admit.
I love my club. I love our fans. I'm proud of the fact that we for most of my life have been **** yet still achieve huge crowds.
TBH mate if we ever won out. We'd be ****ed. Yet we all keep coming back for more.

Syd I am a natural born cynic, but whatever I rant on about, my dreams are still the sameb as they have been for the last52 years, and will be the same when next season starts, you know my views, but am still a Sunderland /Millfield lad till I die.

Cyprus I hear you but have some contrary opinions.

When I first came on here in Jan you were the first to respond. I thank you for that. I read more than I write, and I usually need some red wine in me before I come on, BUT

I cannot accept SAFC mediocraty. We should be a big club because up here we know football. We could ever so reluctantly accept the toon doing well 15 years ago but still wish it was us. We have always been let down. Suggett toWBA, Todd to Derby. I - we - could go on and on. Bad management of a loving fan base has been our downfall. We should be up with the top 5 or 6 on merit! Players wasted, fans ignored.

10th is not good enough. Neither is Bruce. As fans we deserve 6th minimum because of our love for those red and white stripes. Doesn't matter who wears them - they wear them and we follow them. History is important. Without SAFC you wouldn't have penalty spots, nets on goals - probably professional players coming from Scotland.

We are a special club. We don't ask for favours. WE DESERVE A SPECIAL TEAM (THANKS MY GIRL). Thats why I still support them. Thats why I come on here. We are special. We should be lauded. We were pioneers and we were very very good.

What is wrong with wanting that back?

At the time, manure, liverpool, aresenal (who bought their place in the top division) were nothing. Us and Villa were the teams. We should aspire to return. I love our past, but wont be kow-towed into not believing or wanting it to happen again.

    Ha'way the lads!+

Syd, most of us feel the same way and agree in most with what you are saying.
I believe that we will never be any sort of force with SB at the helm his mindset just isn't there he goes for the 0-0 and hopes that we nick a goal that is not the way to play the game.
I also believe that neither the barcodes or us will amount to much for a good while yet and certainly not top 6 (not sure any other teams will either mind).
I've followed the lads since '79 while still at school and was hooked from that first game and, over the years I've seen it all at Sunderland joy, despair, stupidity, crazy decisions and one decent cup run (FA in 92, missed the Milk Cup as was doing my bit for Queen and Country).
Unlike you mate I am sick and tired of the excuses for not doing anything and have become bitter and twisted with certain players and of course SB. I don't think Bruce will go anytime soon but, if we keep getting linked to players who are either past it, injury prone or just plain rubbish he'll be digging his own hole (to quote the Chemical Brothers seeing as Disco went for Pulp).
If we do well this season then fine I'll hold my hands up and say I was wrong which is more than certain people will do if it does go tits up.
Keeping the faith just but it's all about SAFC and we'll still be here no matter who is in charge or how crap the team is because we know deep down that we'll get a great result against someone to make it all worth while.

I think this is pretty much how we all feel. But thats the reason we all love SAFC - the crushing disappointments, the relegation scraps or the (league winning feeling) of a top 10th finish - are part and parcel of being red and white til you die, and im sure most of us wouldnt have it any other way. Can you imagine if we won so.ething? what the hell would we do?

Great post, perfectly voiced, and more true than we'd like to admit.

Ps. I'm one of the young ones!

Another great post. I agree with you and Syd in equal measure.
Things can change. We have to believe that, else. What's the point?

None of the above. You keep us grounded when we need it.

On a completely unrelated topic I reckon we should sack off all of these signings we're being linked to and just bring in Neymar for about £45m.
