Sad to see that there is no thread talking about Sol's retirement. Maybe it's down to the fact some already thought he had called it quits but he did not and today he did officially announce his retirement. A rock in our defence and part of the greatest team in our history. Sol was the main man in that defence. He also helped us win the double in 01/02. We got him on a free from Spurs and it was one of the most bitter transfers ever. But, in the end what he won at Arsenal did justify his move. 3 Fa Cups and 2 League titles. I may be wrong, but I always get the impression that Sol is not an out and out legend in the eyes of some Arsenal fans. Not sure why, though. He was also brilliant for his country and never let England down. I still remember that goal that was disallowed against Argentina in 1998. Thought it was in and we had done it but it was ruled out. He also did something similar against Portugal in 2004. No clubs have ever paid a transfer fee for Sol as he always saw out every contract and moved on. He scored our only goal in the champions league final and despite the outcome of that game, I will never forget that sheer joy of seeing us take the lead in a Champions league final, so much hope and at the time I thought it really was our time. Oh well. Sol then moved on to Portsmouth and he won another FA Cup with them and was part of probably the best team ever as well. Sadly, it went tits up for Pompey and they are now in league one. Sol returned to Arsenal in the 2009-10 season and actually scored against Porto to give us an away goal. At the time, I thought it was terrible move to bring him back but the intelligence he has when it comes to defending never left him and he did a very good job. Whatever, many people think about Sol the person, we can never doubt or question him as a footballer. World class at his peak and a man that was part of one of the greatest periods in our history. Good luck to Sol and hope he becomes a success in whatever he does post Football.
Very underapreciated player, he kept Cygan out of the team, which was always a good thing, and was a truly world class defender at the start of the last decade.
Sol Campbell wasn't underrated - are you serious ??? I thought he had retired already ..... great defender but his missus isn't saying one though considering how much money he has
Campbell was brilliant for us, and much respect for that, but I really did not like him. He was a 'run my contract down, get as much cash as possible' type of player. Free agency seemed to be his biggest goal. Perhaps this is the reason no one was moved to talk about him.
Sol was a superb player and I'll always love him for the outrage he caused Spurs fans! Not suprised he's retired though as I doubt many clubs can afford to buy shorts that big. They must use the fabric requirements of a small country per season.
