This man has no shame, no morals and no idea about how he is perceived by most people in football these days. A tired old has been much like John Barnes, clinging onto any media spotlight he can creep into to prop up his lame book. No one cares Sol. I find it astonishing a man who was chosen above MANY other centre back talents equally as good as him (if not better in my opinion) to represent his country 73 times, can claim to be a victim of racism within the national team. Its a slap in the face to the many players who were and are still discriminated against in the game, that he thinks he was chastised in any manner whatsoever. It seems the only way people like himself can obtain attention is to outrage, rather than do something of merit. Oh how the not so might fall eh? Join the rest of the 'no life after football' brigade Sol.
A tale of 2 England players in a photo, Sol and Paul, both from the same era, make your own mind up.. please log in to view this image
Campbell was a super centre-back or full back, an inspirational player and unfortunate on two occasions to have been wrongfully denied a winning goal in international tournaments. He is respected up and down the country for his playing career as being a world class defender. But as for captain ? In the words of The Great Captain Sensible, "He said Bang, I said Shuddup" Why does Campbell feel the need to open his mouth and soil the memory of a splendid career by uttering such abject garbage ? Because garbage it surely is. When a black player of obvious leadership and influence comes along, the majority of English supporters would insist on his becoming captain. But aside from Ince (greatly missed in our midfield), who has there been who warranted such an outcry ? Maybe Ince's son will fit the bill. God knows we need someone who can. But it was never Campbell
Must admit i was quite surprised when i first saw the comments on twitter and i also saw the above pic with Paul Ince which seems to fly in the face of what is being alleged on face value, Paul captained England checking the stats 7 times, Sol 3. The only thing i ever worry about when a player pulls on the three lions and the captains armband is he leader. I can never ever remember Sol sticking in my mind as being a leader. Now if that's racist then i'm racist. I suppose the first question i ask is regardless of success what leadership qualities and ambition has he shown since, say in comparison to Paul Ince?
I always liked and respected the man as a player, but when I heard the interview yesterday I thought what a cock. maybe it was bad editing. When I hear someone say " I was excellent" I want to crawl into a hole with embarrassment for them. You put in the performance on the pitch others will make their mind up how "excellent" it was
He probably thought he deserved to be captain. He was a part of some fantastic club teams, and although he was a bit too greedy for his own good I reckon he truly believed that he should be captain. Whether he believed that the colour of his skin was a factor is an entirely different matter. I think he's just trying to sell some copies of his book, so he decided to play the race card, a guaranteed way to get in the papers.
I think he probably does all those who are suffering from racism and discrimination a disservice. How long was he club captain for in any of his clubs, and maybe Notts County?? did he stay long enough.
It is not, and never should be, about the colour of your skin, but I suspect money is the root cause of his reappearance. Regrettably the source of most problems in our sport is all about power and the resultant monies received but not earned. But then again there is the matter of foreign ownership but don't start me on that subject (corruption, money laundering and fraud just for starters).
It's all done to sell books. He was a good players and was reasonable choice for captain and was certainly always way more qualified for the job than the likes of Beckham ffs. But then again so was I.......
