Bristol City head coach Sean O'Driscoll tried to sign Lee Johnson for Doncaster a number of times..

Lee Johnson has wasted no time in stamping his authority on Oldham Athletic in his first job in management.

Bristol City head coach Sean O’Driscoll has revealed how he tried to sign Lee Johnson on loan when in charge at Doncaster Rovers.

A confirmed admirer of the former Robins midfielder, O’Driscoll made a number of attempts to bring him to the Keepmoat Stadium, but without success.

Now in his first job in football management with Oldham Athletic, 32-year-old Johnson returns to Ashton Gate for the first time since he left in January 2012 when City and the Latics clash in a League One fixture this Saturday.

O’Driscoll said: “I was always one of Lee’s biggest admirers as a player and I tried to take him on loan a number of times when I was at Doncaster and it was suggested he had had enough of playing for Gary (his father).

“It never actually materialised, but it was not for the want of trying.

“Lee has got them playing a certain way and they all understand it and buy into it. He is one of those managers who has been through the mill (as a player) and has come in with a certain idea of how football clubs should be run.

“You have to create a why rather than a what and a have culture and he is doing that. He is creating something that will encourage people to look beyond results.

“If he gets time, it will be because of that reason. We are trying to do exactly the same thing here.

“You have to try and make people believe in what you are doing and the more players you have who believe, the easier it will be.

“That is what Pep Guardiola did at Barcelona and it is what Jose Mourinho has done at every club he has managed. He creates something the players believe in and is successful for that reason.

“Lee knows he has to get results to keep people happy, but he is also trying to establish a reputation. As a player, keeping possession was key to his game and he hardly ever gave it away.

“He has his critics because of that, but that’s because it is a trait that is not particularly valued in English football.

“We laud it when we see other teams doing it on the international stage or in the Champions League, but when we try and establish it in our own game, it is criticised.”

O’Driscoll has watched Oldham play on a number of occasions this season and has been impressed by what he has seen.

He revealed: “Oldham have been excellent every time I’ve seen them.

“I saw them play well against a very good Wolves side and I saw them beat Shrewsbury, a side that don’t lose many games.

“They will be like any other club in this division in that the strength of their squad will determine where they finish.

“The players have embraced what Lee is trying to do and that is a trait of all the really good managers.”

I can understand why he wanted to sign him, style of football that he likes to play.......not the hoofball that we ended up playing, once we signed Adebola..

'Redprintt won't like that...lol' - 1For, I'm well aware of your views of SOD.
So I reckon you'll be more upset.

But it just confirms my thoughts on SOD.

1For - you and I both know SOD's paying lip service ahead of the game.
Every game this season SOD's on record of rating the opposition.
Just a game to him building bridges before a possible loss to keep the natives happy.
