Socrates was a great big tall midfielder who was fantastic for his height with the ball at his feet, very strong and with his big long legs could cover the ground very quick. Although he never won his first cap for Brazil until he was 25, he went on to play 60 times and score 22 goals from midfield. He was indeed the star of what was by their standards a very average Brazilian team of the time.
RIP Socrates right up there with the best attacking midfielders of all time.

Wow. Shocked to hear this and only 57 as well. Was a great player and part of the brilliant Brazil '82 team that should have won the World Cup. RIP to one of the greatest of his generation <ok>

I said by there standards, they were not on the same planet as the team of the late 60’s early 70’s and more recent teams have been better. During the Socrates years the Dutch, the Germans, Italy and Argentina were better. But still Socrates stood out like a shining light that by there standards………………..,
