Soccer. Where did this definition come from? Anybody know?

Our National Game is called Football. And that's the same the World over.

Except of course in the USA where it is still a minority sport. So why do they call the game soccer?
That is of course because they play a game which they call football, but where only one person occasionally kicks the ball, and he only comes on the field of play for that one kick only then immediately afterwards goes back to the substitutes bench.

American football is actually more closely related to the Internationally played game of Rugby.
It has three major differences; firstly the game is divided into set plays with long periods in between where the coaches decide which predetermined move will be employed for the next play; secondly within each play there can be one forward pass, usually hoisted downfield forty or fifty metres; thirdly each team is allowed to body check any of the opponents who may interfere with the man running with the ball in his hands. This has encouraged the wearing of protective body armour which has encouraged the wearing of body armour to protect the player who is hit from the body armour..........

So IMO opinion we should call their game American Rugby!!!!!!!!!

Let no-one be confused in future.

As Alf Garnet used to say " Soccer is what blokes do to the wife when they come home from the pub on Friday nights"

Good find, but it doesn't challenge the point I was making that American football relates more closely to rugby than it does to football. Even the Aussies call their game Aussie Rules.

Isn't American Football called that because the ball they play with is a foot long?
