Unlikely I think. Doesn't make a difference does it? Like Laudrup I'd back referees most of the time because they don't have the slow mo replays we do. The way Chris Kamara murders refs on Goals On Sunday with his super slowmo replays makes me cringe. Very, very easy to analyse in those circumstances. The game is so damn fast these days. BUT, sometimes refs do see something and just get it completely wrong, as in the WBA / Chelsea game and ours recently. You've got to be certain to give a pen and I still fail to see how he gave it - in real time or is super slowmo.
Like Laudrup I'd back referees most of the time because they don't have the slow mo replays we do. And that folks is the only answer you need to get a grasp of......You are entitled to moan and groan and you may be well right but at the end of the day it is only one persons decision that counts and that is the ref...The dramatics from the fans, players and the manager wont change the result...The ref's governing body will investigate all ref's disputes and all ref's are monitored anyway on a regular basis to make sure they ref every game fair and if they do not they relegate them to a lower division and less money that goes with it...
Maybe we did get one. This story was revealed by Steve Clarke, I think we all know that Laudrup has more class
It won't change the result Dai, but these mistakes need to be highlighted, such as the Chelsea and Stoke penalties which have lost 2 teams points, those 2 points could be crucial come the end of the season. In the short term its all pissing into the wind, as like you say the result won't change, but it can have an effect on the long term of the game. Penalty claims are a more common incident than that of "did the ball cross the line" so the more it causes problems, the more pressure will be put on the governing bodies to look at some sort of system for it. I don't want every incident scrutinised by a tv referee, but big calls such as penalty claims need to be, they are too important to be judged by chance. After all, the ref for us clearly could not have been 100% certain it was a penalty, instead he gave it on what he thought happened, rather than what he knew happened. Even more so when the refs themselves, don't follow the rules, as the incident was not a case of clear handball. The issue is, with the Rangel free kick being adjudged a handball, even if its wrong, we have a chance to defend it, you do not get that luxury with a penalty, so they have to be 100% certain.
and they do get highlighted and dealt with if needed. every game is monitored and a report made by both clubs after the game...We cant go on blaming every decision that don't go our way and leave it to the ref's governing body who will deem if the ref has intentionally made a wrong decision. If they have then they will be dealt with as the ref's association pride themselves in fair play..
Robert Madley, the match official at the centre of a penalty controversy in the 3-3 draw between Swansea and Stoke, has not been given a Barclays Premier League game to referee this weekend.
While Andre Marriner, the match official at the centre of a penalty controversy in the 2-2 draw between West Brom and Chelsea... gets to referee our game on saturday
I hope that one day a ref will come out and apologise if they make a huge mistake that changes the outcome of a match. Unfortunately that seems like years away at the moment. However, the way in which Laudrup handled the press conferences afterwards just highlights the class of the man
I think in these given situations, a Video ref must surely be only a matter of time away, it's in Rugby, it's not difficult to implement, and it doesn't slow the game down significantly either, so here's to the the powers that be getting their act together someday!................
It will have to go through fifa and you know what they are like changing things, but it dont take much for a 5th official to watch a screen to correct or at least advise the ref he got it wrong in his opinion. But the ref must make that decision and his is final..
I'm all for video reffing, where applicable. Can't see it ever happening though with the clowns that run the game. Unless there's a decent bung involved of course. What I would love is for the ref to be mic'd up, like rugby. Let's hear all the prima donna's screaming and effin' and having tantrums. We might see something done about getting some respect into the game then.
When I was doing a referee's course back in the 80's, one of the guests was George Courteny. He said that once, a player had gone up to him because he had given a penalty, and was telling him how he had cost his team the game and that he was a useless ****ing cheat. Courtney said that he calmly replied, " Useless, quite possibly. Cheat? Never. As for me costing you the game, that was one chance they had. How many times did you miss when you were clean through?". Apparently the play slunk off with his tail between his legs. What I'm trying to get over is the fact that the referees sometimes get the blame for a team losing. What about the number of chances our strikers miss etc, that could have put the game out of reach anyway?
Thats true Flub, but then that one player is part of the 11 man side that is there to win lose or draw, withouth a helping hand from the ref, the ref is not part of that 11 man side, so when he gives a decision which benefits the other 11 man side, it does make a hell of a difference if it is a penalty. Hence why we say they played with 12 men, as its given them a huge advantage. Same as a home crowd, it is not part of the 11 man side, but it can have an effect on the game itself.
Tbh Dai I dont think there is a need for a 5th official when there's s 4th official who can stand by a monitor by the tunnel. Given how long its taken to get goal line technology involved id be surprised to see a 'tv ref' this decade.
