The Polish lad sounds good and I would be pleased as anyone else for us to sign him... but he is only 21 and he has only experienced the Polish leagues. Even if we do sign him we will need a second keeper now Dorus is set to warm the bench over at Wolves. Here are some possibles... and your thoughts are welcome: Matt Gilks – Blackpool - performed very well last season behind a suspect defence. Experience of fighting relegation and he has proven to be handy playing a similar style and formation (maybe a bit more direct). Blackpool do have the parachute payments so he wont be cheap. Marcus Hahnemann – Wolves - released on a free. Experienced, may be a bit old. Would be ideal to coax the Polish lad into the Premiership. Lee Camp – Forest - Ideal, if Forest would let him go. The new manager could go either way (1 - look to get funds in to build his side or, 2 - be horrified at the prospect of losing their best player... still, wouldn't cost much more that the young lad). Luke Steele – Barnsley. Reviewed well by the Barnsley lot but I don't know a whole lot about him... any thoughts? David James – Bristol city - would be cheap, if he wanted to come. He is old and prone to a clanger but his greatest quality has always been his distribution, something that we have always gotten from Dorus. He may be tempted to try to put himself back intot he frame for the England squad. Scott Loach – Watford. A lot of promise. Not set the world alight. Would need an experienced head to support him. No reason why he couldn't do it but a little more of a gamble. Boaz Myhil – West Brom. Second choice at West Brom. May be happy to warm the bench. He has proven himself previously to be more than good enough for the level (nice to get a Welsh lad in too!) - it will really come down tothe contract he will be on and what he would accept - along with Brom's willingness to let go of their cover. Anyway... any thoughts?
None of the above excite me really... Hannemann would be the stand out shout for me, but if anything he´s worse at dealing with crosses than De Vries is! I think I´d go with the Polish lad purely for the gamble, but that's the risk taker in me speaking... whatever Huw decides is best works for me.
Would be tempted by a young / old partnership. Always thought it was a good idea when Man U used to do that (have a back up who is in their last year or two of playing and can pass on their wisdom). That would prob mean: 1. Young keeper/inexperienced - Polish keeper, Loach or Camp and 2. Either Hahnemann or James (would prefer James - transfer fee would be small but his wages wouldn't... may be an offer of coaching might help...) It's tough, as you say - no-one really grips me in the way that Graham's signing did... maybe Camp and James sound the best pairing of that...
Out of that lot Camp is the best shout, good keeper who we could probably afford. Myhill or Gilks would be OK if we are struggling to find someone. Hahnamann and James are gone, well past it and unreliable. Loach is intriguing because everyone has rated him for ages but he just hasn't developed much. There are a few who might be available on loan too from bigger clubs, Lindergaard/Amos from Man U, Fabianski from Arsenal, think Given will go to a higher placed club but worth an enquiry. The only problem with that is losing them for the games against their parent clubs.
Decent shout hacker... given our now lack of a first choice keeper, if we loaned someone we´d have to get someone else in too to play the games where the loanee would be illegible! Better to buy I think... but don't go shouting that from the rooftop!
Camp would be my first choice but also the least available of the bunch imo. Loach and Sandomierski'll do me.
Tate would do a good job as cover but we have to look for a keeper that can play our style and better than dorus, we may have to look abroad in Spain maybe for a keeper who would fit the bill. perhaps Rodgers mate marinio can help us with a loanee, that would be fine. but dont panic dependable Tate wont let us down....LOL
Tate as cover... it's hard to tell online but I can only hope your tongue was so firmly in your cheek when you said that it actually pierced it and came out the other side...
Out of those 'keepers you've listed, Camp and Steele are the ones I'd go for (going on a few of their performances down the Lib). Adam Federici would be good too. But I'm hopeful that Greg off of Poland will be tempted by guaranteed 1st team football and go and stand in front of the sticks while the defence sort every attack out.
More testament to our keep ball abilities than anything else! Everyone knows I love Tate, but him as backup GK is bordering on the ridiculous!
Gulacsi at Liverpool is probably going to be loaned out and is a quality young keeper but I suppose you need a long term replacement for Dorus.
He'd be a good shout as backup... problem is we're unlikely to play a young loanee as our number one, but we're unlikely to be lent one from a big club if said big club think he's just going to sit on the bench... hmmmmmm... Methinks Buck and Huw are going to spend a lot of time working on this one!
sir Alex signed a young goalkeeper a few years back as he was impressed when the young lad had a trial for Man utd.........That young goalkeeper was a lad called Alan Tate........so its not that ridiculous unless you can spot talent better than sir Alex ...lol
If we get Lee Camp we'd better tell the rest of the team to take a book on to the pitch - he's the biggest time-waster I've ever come across
camp is probaly earning more at forest than we would offer in the prem, just being in the prem does'nt interest footballer's today, it's money they're interested in, and we're one of the lowest payer's in the top 2 divisions, we'll have to go abroad to pick up tidy player's or youngster's not getting a game at some of the bigger clubs. blackpool have just offered crainey 15 grand a week to stay, we 're a bigger club than blackpool, but are offering lower money.
Sorry man, just because Fergie thought he might have been a keeper about 15 years ago (and ultimately decided he wasn't suited to being a keeper, when he moved him outfield) doesn't mean he can still do a job there now. If we don't have one on the bench and our GK gets a red card, then fine, but as a backup keeper for the entire season? It'd be plain mental to leave ourselves in that position!
