I have done a bit of research into the last ten Premiership seasons and this is what it shows the gains over final seven games of the season : 2004 18th place at 31 games 28.Final points 33 2005 26 " " 33 2006 27 " " 34 2007 30 " " 38 2008 26 " " 36 2009 29 " " 34 2010 27 " " 30 2011 32 " " 37 2012 28 " " 36 2013 31 " " 36 So the most common number of points gained in the final seven games was five on four occasions.seven points on two occasions,eight on two occasions,ten and three once.Giving a mean points gain of 6.3points.If we count Sunderland as having 28 from 31,in effect awarding them three points for their three games in hand then the mean would give 18th place 34 points at the finish.The extremes being 31 and 38.
Just to clarify, does this mean that the team in 18th went on to pick up x number of points in their final 7 games, or that the points total of 18th rose by x points in the final 7 games?
18th place rose by that number. In some cases such as last season the team (Wigan in that case) remained the same.In others it did not.
Ah so doesn't necessarily mean 18th after 31 games went down Interesting though nonthe less I think a lot will depend if teams In the mix can nick points off the top ten, for example those that have fa cup or champions league commitments
Interesting, CT, and accords with my feeling that 18th would end up with 34-35 points. Your 3 points for Sunderland's 3 matches in hand seems about right to me, even if a bit generous given that the first is Liverpool away and the second ManCity away. Well done you.
Over on the Sunderland board they don't seem too confident. After Saturday's performance that's not too surprising.I didn't realise but apparently it is something like six hours since they scored a goal. The cry is for all out attack at Anfield. Some hint of the surreal nature is that now Connor Wickham is being touted as their saviour.
I was very, very surprised to read that, but I can see the logic. Borini isn't available against Liverpool, Fletcher is injured, Altidore has a touch like a concrete wall, and Stocco (sp?) doesn't appear to have adjusted to the Prem at all. Wickham is at least in some kind of form, and should they get relegated, he could well end up being a major component of their championship strikeforce. Makes some sense to get him some big game experience now. If it works and he starts scoring this season, great, if it doesn't, they've not lost anything.
