After watching the playoff final i can say that posh very much deserved to win, and as much as i feel sorry for Huddersfield, it may be better result for saints, as posh seem like a far easier opponent next season what did everyone else think of the game, did posh deserve to win it, and how do you think they'll do next year
they deserved it on the day, they were better than udders, but they did not deserve it over the season, however play offs are decided on one game not the entire season
They deserved to win today, so under the rules deserved promotion. Think they will be serious relegation fodder next season unless they seriously improve their defence, and adequately replace Mackail-Smith and Boyd. Overall I think they are like Colchester, Southend etc. League 1 is their level and winning promotion to the Championship is as good as it gets.
Hard not to feel sorry for Hudders, we had to be at our best to come 2nd. It's all about the performance in the final though and they barely threatened to score today, crossbar aside.
That in my opinion is what undone them......making wrong decisions in front of goal. On at least three occasions in each half a shot was attempted rather than finding someone in a better position. They also played with one up front for a large part of the game which quite frankly did no suite their style. JMO
Only one last decider. Who will stay in the Championship and who will go on to make mega bucks. I am split on this one for as a Berkshire Boy I would love Reading to do well but as Mrs Godders is from Abertawe I have to cheer for the Swans. Either way I win. If Reading win I get to see the Swans who I have seen many times and will be able to stay with in-laws for the away game. If Reading win then I get to accompany some of my family to see the Biscuit Men. No matter who wins though for me it will always be the Saints. COYR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pompey aren't our rivals for we have ambition while they have none.
Got to feel sorry for Huddersfield, after all it could have so easily been us! They really pushed us all the way this season, finishing 8 points ahead of the Posh....the play offs can be so harsh. Surely the Posh are coming straight back down, seemingly going to loose their attacking flair and their defence will need more than a polish ahead of the new season.
I feel it's a place in the championship wasted. P'boro will spend the whole season struggling to be off the foot of the table with that defence that they have. I felt that if huddersfield went up they would be pushing in the right direction ( adkins quote) with us, with the group of honest , hard-working individuals that they have.
I don't feel sorry for Huddersfield but there's a sense of injustice about the play-off and that is not about to go away.
I'm also getting withdrawal symptoms for Adkins' quotes. I hope he's working on some new ones over the summer. You do wonder if he talks in 'soundbites' with his wife.
Huddersfield deserved what they got in the end. They couldn't overcome us despite our typically poor early season. They drew too many. They finished in the playoffs. They got beat by the better side on the day. Hard luck, but that's football.
Bad tactics on the day undone them!! Starting benik upfront on his own and leaving the top scorer on the bench.. woeful decisions..
nah still feel sorry for them, reckon they'd have easily held their own in championship unlike p'boro
For your information Saint_Lambden: Is it now time for us to reconsider who our real rivals are? For some time now I have been seriously concerned that as a football club we sell ourselves short by considering PFC as our rivals. I think we deserve better than that. I think we let ourselves down by focusing on PFC while they certainly haven’t earned the right to consider us as their rivals as I shall explain. If you think about rivalry it means that someone or a group competing against another and by competing we usually mean a contest between individuals or groups for a resource or for an outcome that cannot be shared. Well our outcome short term is promotion from the Championship and then in the long term establishing ourselves as a top Premier League Club possibly playing in the Champions League. All of these outcomes are well within our grasp as we have the infrastructure the players and the resources to achieve this. Do we share these outcomes with PFC? It is there that I have the problem. They aspire to no more than hanging on in the Championship which they may not be able to do after next season but they certainly will not be contenders for promotion. Why not? Well they don’t have the infrastructure, the players or the resources. So we must discount them altogether now for to continue to consider them as rivals would be like trying to argue that the Coop are rivals to Fortnum and Mason. So who should be our rivals? There are two better local candidates who come close to our ambitions and they are Brighton and Hove Albion and Reading FC. Both have good teams, great managers, modern stadia and rich owners. I also have to add the potential for a large fan base. Let us be brutally honest it is they who are going to give us a run for our money next few years and most definitely not PFC. For PFC their games against us next season will be their cup finals and probably their Swan Song to boot. We cannot by definition be rivals with PFC as they do not have the resources to aim for the same outcomes as us so we do not share the same ambitions or outcomes and hence canno be rivals. To sum up we have earned the right to and deserve better rivals than PFC and we now have them in Reading FC and BHA.
For me PFC are of no interest whatsoever and to be honest never were. Some of our fans like the aggression involved when we have met but the fact that we have played them so very rarely reinforces my argument. The mantra now is:- Pompey? Who are they?
