still think thats great for Southampton Football Club? Lallana & Shaw probably would have moved on anyway this summer without being attached to England, but not Lambert, who may well have had Gerrard & co in his earhole the last week or so, acting as unnoffical agents for Liverpool and being able to circumnavigate the transfer rules about speaking to players. Lallana & Shaw have probably been getting much of the same chatter, with wages being bragged about in front of them. Not saying they wouldn't have moved to those clubs without being part of England, but it may well have turned their heads more than being under the control of Saints.
Think you are screwed either way. If they don't get called up, they get frustrated because they think they feel like they can't break into the national side if they stay with the club. OTOH, it may help keep the demand from other clubs down so it's easier to hold on to them. If they do get called up, then I feel like they should be more happy to stay as being with Saints isn't hurting their national team chances. But then it raises their profile so other teams will come to poach.
Yes. That way we can stay safely ensconced in the mid/lower levels of the Premier League ensuring some stability for the league, while at the same time never being able challenge the big clubs. Exactly the way the corrupt governing bodies and all the big money players want it. It's not a real competition at all, but if you are happy to avert your eyes a bit, it can look like one.
I agree with this, but also, a strong board (or a one man equivalent like Cortese) would prevent it all. Strong vision, ambition, football uber alles etc. That's the thing that swung it. Imagine telling Cortese you fancy moving on.
Strange there is nothing on the OS about our England boys and there hasn't been throughout this pre-WC phase. in the past I'm pretty sure we would have had a spread about it. As I said strange
Got to remember the chairman is only doing the job the owner wants him to do. Cortese was doing what KL wanted at the time. Krueger is now doing what Katherina wants ATM. I don't think its as simple as cortese had vision and was strong, more he had the owners backing. Krueger has the bit of corteses job he didn't want, making difficult decisions and giving Katherina a return. I don't envy him.
Kreuger was selected for a different job to Nicola. He's not a finance or business man. He is supposed to be a frontman and to do the things that Nicola didn't do well...keep suppliers, commercial partners and fans happy. Hope he's keeping the other two happy. His main problem is that he knows nothing about the game and therefore sounds false when he talks about it and he also uses a style of speech that we find seriously annoying.
I remember that teenage winger who after only one full season told Cortese in no uncertain terms he wanted to move on. Boy did Cortese open up a can of whup-ass on that kid. He never played for Saints again. Cortese kept him dangling for a full three weeks, then pawned him off to some nothing club called "Arsenal." Ha! Brutal. What a change from the last guy in charge who totally sent the previous young teenage starlet winger who wanted to go to Arsenal straight to Arsenal.
Cortese did everything right with that transfer, but you remember it in what ever way makes you feel better.
I'm not knocking Cortese on that one. I think he did everything he could. That's the point. If they want to go, it's hard to stop them. But now Cortese is saying (and apparently some gullible fans believe him) that he doesn't sell young players and Pochettino and all the players would be staying if he were here, despite the fact that AOC left. And despite the reports that he himself was going to fire Pochettino and that he favored selling Lambert to West Ham. You could make a pretty good case that Osvaldo got exactly the move he wanted in his own unique fashion as well.
