Put yourself in any of the players wanting to "better" their lot in their careers.....whether that be for cash or trophies. If Man City came calling for most players they would jump ( Nasri and Clichy spring to mind)..........these guys will be on amazing £100,000+ wages a WEEK. But think back to the earlier mercenaries......Bellamy, Given, Adebayor.........dumped as has-beens, not good enough to even train with the first team. All that glitters is not gold. Do you think Bellamy or Given would trade their current embarrassing positions they find themselves in for a Newcastle first team role? I accept Man City might be the extreme, but the point I make is players will aim to play in the best team they can.......and if £3 million a year is seemingly not enough to keep ambitious players then what can we do as a club? At the end of the day the club policy dictates everything.......we simply have lost ambition........seemingly clubs like Liverpool ( no CL , no trophies in 5 years) have not.
this reminds me of Legz Akimbo from the League of Gentlemen... sorry to be off topic! It would be great to see every team full of players who have the drive to see their club succeed, but honestly it's not been that way for decades, everyone who gets to the top flight has priorities of either prestige or money which have little to nothing to do with becoming part of a club's history. As far as we're concerned, a new owner in the fullness of time will see us right. I hope.
If I was a footballer and I played for NUFC I would play in any division for them no matter what. Would not care about money.
