IKnow its early days.........but is Smiffy ever going to score? I watched him miss a couple of sitters in our opener.....again Saturday and again tonight!
Quite honestly bp, I don't know what Cookie sees in him. He isn't really a target man like Ryan Taylor was, despite the fact he is 6'4" tall. He doesn't win everything in the air, and spends too much time out wide. We are in desperate need of a natural goalscorer like Mark McNulty, or Conor Chaplin should start up front.
I was really expecting him to be a box target man........some one always looking at getting on the end of crosses........but as you say.....he spends too much time out wide!
I wonder if PC will remain stubborn, and name Smith as our sole striker again against Colchester this coming Saturday, or will he take a "gamble" and play two up front in say Conor Chaplin and Noel Hunt ? Time will tell.....
Generally one up front 'target men' are not prolific goal scorers. If, as Woopert says, Smith does not fit the lone target man roll is it likely that Hunt or Main would? ( Chaplin I assume is not physically suited to that roll). If the answer is no then the one up front formation is not appropriate for our current player resources. The next logical step is two up front. Once this step is made the target man roll becomes less important and the two players that are most likely to score ( ie right place at the right time skills) become the logical selections.. Now there is room for Chaplin. Rumours Chaplin may move to Brighton are very worrying if he is gone before the above logic plays out.
Well, well, well !! Smithy scores a hatrick in the 4-3 defeat at Yeovil Town in the meaningless Micky Mouse Cup. I knew he would come good, honest
