Michael Smith predicts Bristol Rovers will need four points from their remaining four games of the season to remain in the Football League.

Darrell Clarke's side have collected 47 points so far this season and Smith said:

"Personally I think that we need to get four more points. Some people are saying that we might only need another win, but I wouldn't like to cut it that fine. I've got four in my mind, but I'd still hope to get more from the four games we have left. We still have to play Wycombe in what will probably be a massive game for us and they also have to play Northampton, so there is still plenty to be decided over this next couple of weeks. We are not in the bottom two and if we pick up more points than the teams below us we will stay up, It's as simple as that. I am still very confident that we will be safe."

Rovers, however, will need to find an improvement on a performance that manager Clarke labelled as "unacceptable" when slipping up to bottom-of-the-table Torquay on Saturday. The defeat sparked an angry reaction among frustrated supporters at the Memorial Stadium, and Smith said:
"We did get a bit of stick on Saturday. You'd be hard-pushed to find anyone in the group who would say we didn't deserve that because it was obviously our most disappointing performance of the season. We started well enough, but we just didn't come out in the second half. Once they scored their first goal the nerves probably started to affect one or two of our players. It was only when we were two goals down with five minutes to play that we started playing and it is important that we find away to perform in that fashion over 90 minutes. The supporters pay good money to come and watch us play and I wouldn't deny them their right to have a go. I'd probably be doing the same if I was in their shoes. They have to stick with us now and I am sure they will."

Rovers continue their bid to collect the points they need to ward off the threat of relegation when they play in front of 18,000 supporters against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday. When asked whether those inside the changing room were feeling under any pressure because of the situation, Smith replied:
"There is pressure of some kind in every single job. It affects every individual differently and you have to deal with that in your own way. It has been a battle in every one of the three seasons I have been here, but that has made me stronger as a footballer from a mental point of view. Everyone knows the situation we are in and there is no hiding place."

He's probably right - but god knows where those 4 points are going to come from!

I think we need 6 - just to be sure.
