BRISTOL CITY: Analysis of the Robins helped us win, says Sheffield Wednesday coach Carlos Carvalhal....

HEAD coach Carlos Carvalhal attributed Sheffield Wednesday's opening-day victory over Bristol City to a detailed analysis of the opposition's strengths and weaknesses.
The Owls restricted last season's League One champions to a mere handful of goal-scoring opportunities, while exploiting City's weak points to create numerous chances themselves.
Delighted by his team's performance, both in and out of possession, the Portuguese described the performance as a "very professional exhibition."
He explained: "Bristol (City) are a very hard team to play against and they will do well this season.

They have good organisation and play very positive football.
"We studied them very well and took our time to look at their strong points, but also at their weaknesses.

Every team in the world has weaknesses and I understand football is a clever and a smart game.
"If you understand in all the situations what you must do, then you are more likely to win.
"We did this one hundred per cent perfectly. When we needed to press them, we pressed them at the right points, and when we had the opportunity to attack, we did it at speed and moved the ball well."

Progressive up until the time they went 2-0 ahead, Wednesday profited from putting men behind the ball and counter-attacking a City side that was forced to throw caution to the wind during the final 19 minutes.
Carvalhal added: "At 2-0 up, we had to close the door, and we did that extremely well. The players closed all the doors and windows and there was no light in our house.
"We were very professional and I think our fans are very happy with what they saw."

More than 22,000 Wednesday fans created a cauldron of noise inside Hillsborough and they went home happy at both the result and performance.
"I want to congratulate the supporters, because they make a lot of noise and give us a very good atmosphere to play in," said Carvalhal.
"They supported the team and I think they enjoyed what they saw. I am very pleased with my players and the supporters and I think we have sent out a message."

actually not as smart as he says he is, when Joe went off we were a weakened side, Burns did well but Joe was always going to worry them...

I don't think we can attribute the defeat to that - Wednesday were good value for their win and, as you said, Burns played as well as anyone.

It may come over as cocky to some, but I think what he said was perfectly reasonable - he was complimentary of City and indicated that he felt they needed to shut up shop in order to secure the result.

It's a game of fine margins - had Burns' header gone in it's 1-1 and a tense finish; twenty seconds later in in our net.

The trouble is that with a small squad you can't change things if you are being outsmarted
