We often here reminiscences about being one of the throng at a massive game, such as Pompey at Wembley, AC Milan at Fratton and a plethora of other memorable games over the years. But what about games where you have been one of only a handful of Pompey fans in attendance? What do you reckon is the smallest turn out that you've been part of? How did you go about keeping songs and chants going and making yourselves heard? Were you like a few 'Daniels' in the lions den, with a large home crowd to deal with, or were the home stands/terraces just as sparsely occupied? What was the atmosphere like at the game and was the game itself entertaining enough for you to have been glad you made the effort to attend? Let's here your stories about these 'forgotten games'
Nothing to do with the thread, but this is the 666th thread on the Pompey board. Thought it worth a mention!
Noo ne noo noo! I was at a game at Blackburn, many years before their success. All week, snow had gripped the country and this was the only Div2 fixture to be played that day, thanks mainly to Blackburn having undersoil heating. Only about 70+ Pompey fans turned up, of which I was one. The terrace still had thick snow on it so, as Bryan Ferry might have said, well you can guess the rest. Feel free, bored Saints fans to make anecdotes about how that was a massive away support, for Pompey, or any other equally (yawn) humourous remarks, at your leisure.
That's actually not a bad turnout, considering the conditions. ...I mean, LOL, that must be your biggest away following ever!!!!!1
Well, to be honest I don't need to because this post is sort of "self-satirising". Give me a minute, but I think the snowman has more comedic possibilities. Something like, "say what you like about the blue-few, but that snowman at Blackburn was no fair-weather fan!! No OK,, I'll keep working on it.
I went to the Fa cup 3rd round replay in Coventry in 2010 (season we got to final). Similar circumstances to last story, it had been snowing quite bad. It was a freezing cold Tuesday night, not sure of the crowd but the stadium was basically empty. I'm sure the small amount of our fans outnumbered the Coventry fans which says a lot. I think the crowd size was also due to the game being shown live on itv. The game itself was poor as you would expect and we went 1-0 down quite early on I think. But we equalised in the 90th minute to take the game to extra time, then as the game looked like it was heading for penalties Aarron mokoena pops up in the 120th minute! We all went absolutely mad! It was well worth the difficult journey up there, and it also got me a guaranteed ticket for the 5th round, against scum!!
I remember a winter Tuesday night game down at Fratton against Port Vale back in those horrendous Div 3 days before we made the final drop to Div 4. It was freezing and the crowd was well under 5000. The game was probably summed up best by a dog that got on the pitch at half time, nonchalently made its way along the touchline and 'left a deposit' in the Fratton goal! If I remember rightly we nicknamed it 'Scummer'. (The dog that is)
Thread re-opened [by request] so let's hear some more anecdotes to justify doing so! Did any-one go to an away fixture in the Full Members Cup to find tumbleweed rolling around the terraces? Or an Anglo Italian Cup fixture?
Take your time, it's only 11 hours after this thread was re-opened due to "popular demand". Oh look, there is some tumbleweed.........
All the away games I've been to have been pretty well attended. Well they're all London teams I've been too. However, during Ipswich away in our FA Cup Winning run, I was sat among the home fans so I was part of a small merry band of Portsmouth supporters sitting in the home end! Of course, I just had to join in with the chants (and cheer when we scored)..... The stewards did give me some glares. Also, not quite Portsmouth related but I went to a game on Saturday where the total attendance was something like 20 people, maybe less. Hurrah for the Wessex League Division 1!
