I used to have it on my old pc but had probs with it. I'm not really clued up on them but used Kaspersky for last two years and it's been great for me. Norton might be good on this pc but never tried it, hope you get sorted <ok>

    I have Norton 360 Gold.

When you say your computer crashed Rocky, was it caused by a virus? No anti virus s/w will stop a virus if you override its warnings. The worst one I came across was the Internet Defender, which aimed to frighten you with bogus virus warnings. If you ever clicked on anything to do with that you were in serious trouble and anti virus s/w couldn't get rid of it. The code it parked in your pc had to be detected and removed manually. Otherwise it would gradually disable your s/w. A lot of people had real problems with it.

I think the best thing to do is to get some free advice from various computer shops. They will advise different ones and run down others. Use the info to go back and question what you have been told. After a while you get to discover who talks the most sense, without bias, then make your own "better informed" decision.

I'd say go with avg free, its effective, lightweight and doesn't slow computer down too much, and its free. Please DO NOT use norton, it causes more problems than it solves

I use Eset and would recommend that too. I've had norton and mcafee in the past and they've not been that good, but a mate who's an IT expert recommended Eset to me and it's been spot for the last couple of years.

Confused Rocky. I wouldn't be swayed too much by the words IT expert. Like any other experts, you ask a dozen of them and you'll get at least half a dozen different answers. Personally I'm wary of anything that's free because there is a stronger chance that the resources won't be available to keep up with the latest viruses, and the fact that it didn't cost anything is not very comforting when you lose all your work.

If you have work that needs to be ultra secure, by far the safest way is to have one computer for accessing the internet and one (the works computer) that never connects to the internet. Then only transfer stuff to the works computer after it has been virus checked. That's what I call belt and braces. A more general tip is don't access the internet when logged on as Administrator.
