I'm late posting this thread (only had access to the internet on my laptop yesterday), but very sad news legendary commentator Sir Peter O'Sullevan passed away at the grand old age of 97. What was his best commentary? Red Rum's third Grand National win in 1977? Dawn Run winning 1986 Cheltenham Gold Cup? Also, which race should be named in his honour?

If a race were to be named after him, it would have to be one of the great races of the calendar. What about "The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup in memory of Sir Peter O' Sullevan"?

A race to name after him? Interesting question. Wouldn't a Cheltenham Festival race be most apt, seeing as his most famous calls are from there? What about that new mares novice race??? Would give it more respect from all the haters (who obviously prefer a fooking flat charity race it is replacing after all

I agree with Oddy it would have to be a real traditional classic from the calendar and ideally one that pays homage to his wonderful calls.
I wouldn't want it to be an intermediate Frade 1 (Ryanair/mares novice/JLT) and with the sponsorship getting in the way of the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle, I'd be inclined to consider a Henessey as that name is synonymous with the race rather than temporary sponsorship.
However, given his immortality within the sport, part of me feels that the Sir Peter O'Sullivan Arkle Novice Steeplechase has both the class and the company with which his name truly belongs.
