A CHARITY set up by late football great Sir Bobby Robson has now raised a fantastic total of £4.7m for the fight against cancer.

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, launched by the former England and Newcastle United manager in 2008, also made its largest contribution to date last month when it gave £850,000 towards life-saving new cyber surgery equipment at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital.

It caps off another impressive year for the charity, in which Sir Bobby’s wife, Lady Elsie, officially opened the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation PET Tracer Production Unit, which was jointly funded by the charity and Newcastle University.

Sir Bobby Robson died of lung cancer in July 2009 – but his legacy lives on through the sterling work of his charity.

Lady Elsie, speaking after meeting patients, staff and fundraisers at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre in Newcastle, said: “It gives me great pleasure to see the legacy my husband left through the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation growing and helping even more people.

“The Foundation continues to be a great team effort against cancer, and this really has been a great year for that team. No doubt Bob would compare it to winning the league.”

Next year promises to be another memorable time for the Foundation, with major fundraising events planned including Sir Bobby Robson – A Celebration at The Sage Gateshead on what would have been Sir Bobby’s 80th birthday on February 18.

The event will feature the likes of South Tyneside’s own Joe McElderry and current England boss Roy Hodgson.

I remember wanting him sacked from the England job before the 1990 world cup.
Such a shame we did not win that semi-final under him.
He turned an average England team into a great one during that world cup.
And even now he is helping to save peoples lives, a great man :emoticon-0137-clapp

Amazing when you think he wanted to raise half a million pounds, he would be so proud of all the people involved throughout the 4-5 years sinec the charity was set up.

He did a lot of good work behind the scenes even at an advanced stage of the big 'C'.

Was at the friendly at Ipswich in honour of Sir Bobby and there was a great turn out and a great atmosphere.

He'll be well remembered and thought of by all he embraced.

A humble man who never forgot his roots. It was very sad to see him in such a bad way at the friendly in his honour at SJP the day before he died. Once again a great turn out with people from all over the world turning up to see the game.
