I know all my Chelsea & Fulham mates, ( and all those that I know who follow other Premiership clubs ) absolutley hate him. This got me thinking.... Do we as QPR fans hate him? ( Bearing in mind that we've been out of 'the game' for fifteen years. ) The last time we played them ( in the Prem ), Wilkins was our boss. Seems like a lifetime ago. If so why? If not why? and.. will that change after we play Man U ? and will we & football miss him when he retires? Or do you think he has mellowed, and that all his detractors, be-grudgingly admire him? I know this is not a QPR post, per-se, but we haven't encountered the wiley old fox for a bit, and just thought i'd throw it out there to gauge the general feeling from our point of view. Whatever he is, after 25 years at the helm. He is certainly an enigma, that I doubt football will ever see the likes of again.
Love him or hate him, I don't think there's a fan out there who can deny that he is probably the best club manager of all time, by far. He might be a miserable, annoying Scottish piss head, but he has for 25 years continuously changed and shaped Man Utd in to a winning team. Look at the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, they try and buy their way to success and have almost forgotten what their youth academies are about. As for English players, forget it. But Ferguson has always brought in young players from the academy, and he's also kept the basis of their team around English players. When he has bought players, he's usually done it early before they make a name for themselves, so he doesn't have to pay top price, but has then gone on to cash in and make United money. So even if you don't like him, it is very hard not to admire him for what he has achieved and I doubt their are many of his haters who wouldn't actually want him at their club.
Wow, LoneRanger, I think you've ended all debate on this one in an excellent well put reply. It's hard to argue with that, and in such a quick response. Nice one. '' Bloody football , eh. ''
He and Utd cost us our place in the Premier League 15 years ago. Was it 7 mins of extra time until they scored? Will forgive and forget if he sells us Berbatov. I can't deny his accomplishments and the manner in which he's achieved them (nurturing youth and buying well), but he is a miserable old so-and-so. His BBC ban didn't bother me one bit. It's a shame it had to end this season.
I seem to remember Cantona scoring in the 95th minute against us a few games before we went down. Brought tears to my eyes and made me hate Man U and Trafford time. Begrudgingly respect the perpetually chewing, purple faced tosspot and his team but that's all I can muster.
Yes Matt, I sadly remember this well. It's up there with O'Neils winner with a lowly header for Forest in the 93rd minute in the FA Cup... 79 I think.
Btw, this is the game , when I think i've seen the best save ever. Phil Parkes from John Robertson in the first half. Very close second was John Burridge away to Charlton circa 1981, cant remember who had the shot.
Loneranger I feel that you have forgotten about the vast sums he has paid for the likes of Rooney, Berbatov, Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Vidic, Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Van der Saar, Eric Djemba Djemba etc none of these players came through trafford uniteds youth academy, plus he has been given chairmen that have not got trigger happy, I wonder if he would still be with his present club if they a) If Lee Sharpe had not helped his side defeat Nottingham Forset all those years ago, b) If his club had no money to buy the players that helped win titles, cups & c) Also a chairman (chairmen) owners that stood by him and suported him. I personally think that their have been better managers i.e. Brian Clough, Bob Paisley & Sir Bobby Robson. Cloughie won honours with Derby County (League Title) & Nottingham Forest League Title 2 European cups, League cups) neither of these teams were classed as fashionable, he deserved a knighthood and so did Bob Paisley who took over Liverpool from Bill Shankly and lead them to numerous league titles & European cups and neither of these two greats had the kind of money ferguson has been given to strengthen their squads. Sir Bobby Robson was a manager in England with an small suffolk team Ipswich Town with whom he won just 2 cups the FA cup and I think Ipswich won the Uefa cup, he achieved greater success in Holland with PSV Eindhoven and Portugal with sporting Lisbon, he then went on to manager Barcelona and met up with Jose Mourinho, not forgetting that he led his country in the 1986 Mexico world cup finals and then again four years later in Italia 1990 and the best finish in a world cup finals outside England another legend.
Cripers Tommy V, I think you've just created another thread for who is the greatest manager of all time!!!
Veron. One of the best players in the world before he signed for them. Forlan. Made me laugh every time he took to the field in a Utd top. Taibi. See Forlan. That's a good 30 mill worth of mistakes. How many managers could survive that?
He also gave us one of our best ever days the 4-1 win at Old Trafford. For sustained success he is the best ever. But he must take some responsibility for the managerial WUM and mind game bollocks that is so prevalent now, culminating in Mourinho. Only Clough really did it before and he was funny.
Agreed. Anyone who can take Forest to back to back European Cups gets my vote. And he was ****ing hilarious with it.Genius.
