The latest picture album on the club website explains how recent training sessions have been split into two distinct sessions, with Carver taking the attacking players and Pardew with the defensive lot. The photo album is primarily focused on Steven Taylor in his first full session which is great news, but the most interesting thing is that Gutierrez is in with the defensive players rather than the attacking players which strongly suggests he'll be continuing inthat holding role with Tiote this season, but with it looking like a more permanent switch.

I think Jonas is much more effective in the role he was playing last year than as a winger in a 4-4-2. So the news that he is lumping in with the defensive players is quite positive news imo.

Seeing the title there gave me a thought. Seeing how well Jonas defending last year, is there a possibility that we could see him lining up at Full back on either side? He has played there for Argentina. I wouldn't like him to be starting there as I feel he is far too important to us in midfield however he would be good cover. Hopefully this shouldn't be a problem but if the Debuchy deal falls through, you never know!

He was always a defensive midfielder IMO.

Even though he was on the LW at the start of the season, for most of the games, he was camped back in our own half covering Raylor, and sitting back.

Then later on in the season, with our 4-3-3 system, he was a CDM and playing next to Tiote at the back.

He's much more useful in the defensive position. We need to look for better options for attacking mids.

I wouldn't read too much into it. The nature of his game and versatility means he'll need to have a foot in both camps at various stages. Jonas will be used in the correct way, the same way as last season. He'll play where it suits for any given game and he'll do a fantastic job whichever role it is. I still see him being used left when the time is right, possibly early doors to give us a solid start.
