Since Facebook bought watsapp everything you type or upload on there is being harvested, they pretend it's encrypted but the police monitor activity, and your data is being harvested sold and stored.

The safest way to send messages is through Signal which is pretty much the same as SMS but completely private.

Lots of watsapp drug groups got lifted lately , there have been a few cases in the States where the feds have demanded that Signal attempt to open the messages and they claimed that there is no back door to the encryption.

You just set your phone to use signal as the main sms function and it's pretty much identical to normal text messages but your provider won't have access to them.
