Siem de Jong admits to Newcastle contact

DUTCH midfielder Siem de Jong has admitted Newcastle United have been in contact about his availability.

The midfielder has been linked with the Magpies in the past, as they look for a replacement for Yohan Cabaye.

The 25-year-old, whose younger brother Luuk was on loan at St James’s Park last season, says he isn’t sure if he will stay at Ajax next term.

“I really do not know what I’ll do next season,” he said. I have spoken with the club but nothing is sorted.

“Also with Newcastle United, where my brother played last time, they have had a little contact with my agent.

“There was contact before, but it’s nothing concrete. Newcastle is a great club and it would be super to work with my brother and play football.”

“I do not know if he’ll be there. He is employed by Borussia Mönchengladbach, and has not received a contract offer from Newcastle.

“I’m going next week to talk to Ajax and then I’ll see.”

He's coming off of the back of an injury ravaged and below par season. It would be more of a gamble than I would have thought last summer.

We can't afford players simple as that.

He's so non-committal in that quote it's unreal, he seems if anything to be encouraging us to sign his little bro on the off chance he might come to us. Grasping at straws springs to mind. That said, I'd dance a jig if we got him.

Newcastle United’s pursuit of Siem De Jong was always going to be a tricky one given the transfer status of his younger brother Luuk.

Signed by the Toon on a season-long loan last term, Luuk De Jong struggled to make any kind of impact during 12 outings for the Magpies meaning that, come the end of the campaign, he was never likely to be offered a permanent move.

But then came the news that Newcastle had contacted his brother, currently of Ajax, over a potential summer transfer to Tyneside.

Though awkward enough in itself, the situation was made all the more uneasy by comments from Siem, which seemed to indicate he was open to moving to the Magpies as it would provide him with the opportunity to link up with his brother.

Luuk De Jong has endured a miserable spell in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach, so it was understandable that Siem De Jong would be considerate of his brother’s interests.

But with Newcastle unlikely to offer any kind of contract to the former Twente forward, it appeared that a deal for his sibling was off the table.

That was until today with German news website Der Sechzehner reporting that Luuk De Jong could be granted an escape from Gladbach with PSV Eindhoven thought to be keen on recruiting the 23-year-old forward.

This fresh development could also be a welcome one for Newcastle, with Amsterdam favourite Siem De Jong unlikely to be keen on moving to archrivals PSV, leaving him open to negotiate with the Toon and keep his conscience clear at the same time.

The acquisition of De Jong would represent the latest in a series of players to sign with the St James’ Park club, including Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback.

Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis is also thought to be nearing a move to Newcastle while the likes of Danny Ings and Jonathan Soriano have been linked to the club in recent weeks.

Yes please. He's exactly the type of player we need.
