Sunderland visit Shrewsbury Town in League One Last time out Sunderland beat Carlisle and Shrewsbury lost at Fleetwood. Sunderland travel to Shrewsbury on Saturday looking to make it three wins in a row. The Black Cats League One clash with Blackpool was postponed because of a number of international call-ups and lost ground in the promotion chase as a result. Sunderland slipped to fifth in the table and will hope to pick up where they left off in the 3-1 Checkatrade Trophy win over Carlisle last Tuesday. Shrewsbury were beaten League One play-off finalists last term but have made a slow start to this campaign. The Shrews currently sit 17th in League One. Jack Ross will be without Watmore, Wyke, Loovens and Hume through injury, Oviedo and Power are both suspended. Sinclair and Maja missed the win over Carlisle with minor injuries but it is hoped they will all be fit enough to return to the squad. Jack Ross: "Lynden Gooch is back available. He’s trained all week and he’s trained really well so he’ll be back fit and available. Glenn Loovens will start training next week but is still unavailable for the weekend.” “Duncan Watmore has had a week of full training with me this week. No exceptions, he’s done absolutely everything that everyone else has done which is brilliant. But he’s still a little bit away in terms of games.” "Charlie (Wyke) and Denver (Hume) still have a bit to go but they’re getting there. Donald Love is also back in training and getting closer. So we’re starting to get there.” “The bench is skewed a little bit with Max (Power) and Bryan (Oviedo) still unavailable it means that we need Benji (Kimpioka) and Bali (Mumba) to supplement the squad which is no problem in terms of their availability, but in terms of their age, they’re still very young." John Askey: “We’re always looking at trying to improve things. But what we don’t have to lose sight of is that we’re not too far away. If we start trying to reinvent the wheel then the wheels can come off. It’s getting that balance, sometimes it can be something that sparks it. Not necessarily something you do on the training ground, but individuals doing the right thing at the right time and decision making by players out there.” Match Appointments: Referee:John Busby Assistants:Matthew Jones and Gareth Mellor Fourth Official:Grant Taylor Team Line ups Sunderland: McLaughlin, Matthews, Baldwin, Flanagan, James, McGeouch, Cattermole, Honeyman, McGeady, Maja, Maguire. My guess is a 2-0 away win Ha’way the Lads
Nice one RTB, we need to notch a third win on the bounce tomorrow then kick on from there with a tough game on Tuedsay. Not underestimating Shrewsbury but it's time for us to really kick on and put a solid run through till Christmas to really show this league what were all about. We seem to enjoy the away games so six points by 10pm Tuesday night would be the perfect start.
For the first time in at least a decade I am beginning to feel pleased that Sunderland are playing on a weekend. Instead of a feeling of a mixture of huge indifference with a hint of dread!..........2-1 defeat!
Yeah I've been like that this season. Strange to look forward to games - in the premier I used to get a knotted stomach before matches every week. Nerves jangled no matter who the opposition. That dwindled away to an "expect to get pummelled" feeling over the last few years. the knots are back now and I love it. Excited about the club and liking watching them again. Plenty of my mag mates say "It's the third division" - fans would all rather be fighting for success in a lower league than hoping to avoid the drop in the premier league surely? I know I do!!
Great thread RTB - I'd start Gooch ahead of McGeady though - Maguire out left and Gooch out right. Better workrate and more mobile - also more likely to score from what I've seen so far!!
I'd go along with Gooch, who would also make a great sub against tired legs if the game was tight and I understand they play that way, so maybe McGeady might be the one to open them up, either way I'm expecting a clean sheet and a win, 1-0 will do me.
Its a funny old game as I would still be pissing myself if Newcastle had dropped to the third tier. However, we are winning plenty of games with plenty of goals while they cant win a game and are near the bottom.
Deffo Gooch over McGeady for me, he's a better player. Not sure if he should start this game if he's not 100% but in principle he gets the nod from me every time.
I was just thinking Gooch might not be 100% ready. However I can't see any logic in dropping Maguire :-
Unusual situation for us to have the problem of having too many good players and having to leave some out, no I wouldn't drop Maguire either I'd replace Sinclair with him and Honeyman for McGeady for me although could go either way with that one. Not only a good player but takes our set pieces too, we look a bit lost in that respect when he's not on the pitch.
