PORTSMOUTH v SHREWSBURY League One – 20 October 2012 Link to BBC Preview: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19939585 Last meeting at Fratton Park 21 January 1989 – Second Division [Championship] Pompey 2-0 Shrewsbury Shrewsbury were ultimately relegated, ending a ten year stay in the 2nd Tier. Who are Ya? The club was formed in 1886 and joined the Football league in 1950. They joined in Third Division North, but were moved to the Southern Division after one season. They were one of the original Fourth Division teams in 1958, but gained promotion [finishing 4th] in its first season. They remained in the Third Division until relegation in 1974. Again they came straight back up, this time as runners up. Another promotion, as Third Division Champions, saw them reach the Second Division for the first time in 1979 That season also saw them reach the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup, their best performance, which saw them go out after a replay with First Division Wolves. They had 10 seasons in, what is now the Championship, before relegations in 1989 and 1992 saw them back in the 4th Tier. After 53 years in the Football League, they finished bottom in 2003 and suffered relegation to the Conference. Their absence lasted only a single season though, courtesy of a Penalty shoot-out win over Aldershot in the 2004 Playoff final. They remained in League Two until last season, when they won promotion as runners up. Highest League Finish: 8th in Second Division [Championship] 1984 & 1985 Lowest League Finish*: 3rd in Conference 2004 [Playoff winners – Promoted] Honours: 3rd Tier [League One] winners 1979 4th Tier [League Two] winners 1994; runners up 1975, 2012; promoted in 4th 1959; playoff runners up 2007, 2009 5th Tier [BSP] playoff winners 2004 FA Cup quarter finals 1979, 1982 League Cup semi finals 1961 Welsh Cup winners 1891, 1938, 1977, 1979, 1984, 1985; runners up 1931, 1948, 1980 *since joining the Football League in 1950 Yesteryear 15 January 1910 – FA Cup Round 1 Portsmouth 3-0 Shrewsbury. This was the very first meeting between the two [then non-league] sides. Pompey went out to Coventry City in the next round. Silver Stats – Shrewsbury Town 5 seasons ago [2008] – 18th in League Two 10 seasons ago [2003] – 24th in Div 3 [League Two] – relegated 15 seasons ago [1998] – 13th in Div 3 [League Two] 20 seasons ago [1993] – 9th in Div 3 [League Two] 25 seasons ago [1988] – 18th in Second Division [Championship] Random Fact: With 6 wins, Shrewsbury were the most successful English team in the Welsh Cup. Match Odds (at Skybet) Pompey: 6/5 Shrewsbury: 2/1 Draw: 23/10 Mystic Devo After 3 defeats on the bounce, Pompey have picked up 10 points from 4 league games, with just the Paint Pot defeat to Wycombe interrupting the current form. Shrewsbury are still looking for their first away win, having drawn at Stevenage, Hartlepool and Brentford, and lost at Sheffield Utd, Notts Co and Doncaster. Their last game though was a home win against Walsall, who beat us at Fratton Park. I think the Shrews will try and pack the midfield, playing 4-5-1, which could cause a stalemate unless Pompey can break their resolve. I'm almost afraid of putting the mockers on it by predicting a home win, but I'll risk it. Devo reckons: Pompey 1-0 Shrewsbury
I think we will struggle to break them down so will go for a bore draw 0-0 and hope to be pleasantly surprised!PUP
2-0 again to Pompey - Thomas & McLeod to score Just hope Eddie Howe doesn't want Wes Thomas back at Bournemouth too quickly
2-1 up- Thomas and McLeod followed by Morgan for the Shrews and within seconds he got sent off - a yellow followed by the red. All happening at Fratton Park
Yes- but if you do it's only a yellow card. According to BBC Sport, it was a straight red, so I doubt it was because he removed his shirt. Shrewsbury are really losing their discipline in this game ..... What does everyone make of numerous players not wearing the "Kick it out" T-shirts in the Prem??
Nobody is quite sure - he was gobbing off to the Ref - got a yellow followed by an immediate red. They've got 4 yellows as well.
On your last question - the Kick it Out shirts - you can only support something you really believe in - the PL and the clubs appear to have been really weak in leading this.
6 minutes added time - oh dear - too much time - the volume has been cranked up from the Fratton end to keep the team going
