Do you fans think that it is about time that we have our own channel on Sky or not. After all it wil provide extra revenue for the club, once it is up and running.

Tev bit of a noob question but how does this work, how much does it cost compared to sky sports?

I would love a City TV channel, i will not pay for sky sports because you cannot watch your own team every week just what they decide to put on which is of no interest to me.

not wumming but city are still a small club and dont have a big enough fan base to attract enough subscribers to justify a channel. this is something to maybe think about in 7-8 years time assuming you are still challengin/winning trophies and your club and fanbase has grown

How big a fan base is required to make something like this work?

You have obviously looked into this so could you tell us how big our fan-base is ?

I don't think lack of subscribers would hold our owners back if they thought they could make a success out of this.

i dont know any figures regarding your fan base, but i would assume the vast majority live in manchester or surrounding areas.

i live in a fairly neutral area (lincolnshire) and i honestly cannot remember speaking to a man city fan even during my school years. liverpool/manutd/arsenal are most supported then newcastle/chelsea and leeds. sheff wed/utd /bradford have a few but mainly due to location.

10 years ago chelsea fans were very rare around here but their wealth has/is attracting more fans every year. thats just my area and no doubt their growth is the same everywhere inculding abroad

man city still havent really done anything yet but im sure they will follow chelsea in generating more fans each year they remain successful. i would still imagine it is fairly small outside manchester.

a tv station running simply for 1 city isnt viable imo
the likes of liverpool/utd and arsenal have fans tuning in in every corner of the country

i wouldnt like to say what man city fan base stands at but for arguments sake lets assume it is 500,000. TV subscibers for the other teams channels are very low in comparision to fans (maybe less than 5%). using this figure you could estimate 5000 at the most would subscribe to a man city channel. i doubt that would even cover the cost of airing the station.

again my figures are made up, i might be way out with them. if anyone does have any better estimates we could look at it more in depth.

im guessing even that 5% fan = subscriber ratio is still too high.

regardless like i said i reckon man city as a club are going to grow massively within the next 3-5 years and given 7-8 years their fan base will start to match it. apart from the odd glory suporter man city wont be picking up many older uk based fans. just like chelsea the majority of your new fan base will come from the playground.

internationally is however a different story but im not even sure they would have access to our tv stations.

Thanks for taking the time to post.
I know we have a lot of overseas fans as the facebook page has an endless stream of links posted to other sites and forums in other countries, assuming the channel could be accessed by every country it may be viable.
As it stands you are probably right it would not be viable however we have owners who have more money than they can shake a stick at so not making money in the formative years may not be a concern.

lazylucas you don't have to have a fan base of 100,000+ just to make viable. What you need is fans that are willing to pay the subscription to view what is on offer. As you can see the team is progressing very nicely, and if all goses well this season we may well be premier champions this season. Which will no doubt bring in a few more glory hunters along with it.

Don't forget the club can also show whats going on in the back gound i.e. how the 2nd team is going and right down to the youth team. If the clubs shows their games which is something that sky will never do. In this day and age every club should be looking at how to raise revenue to keep the cost of ticket prices as low as possible for the fans.

maybe, but it would be a bit niave to think man city would get a higher % of subscribers than any other english club. especailly when northern fans are poorer than those living in london

it is a comon fact londoners are in general richer than the rest of the country, of course there are many exceptions but the average fan is generally worse off due to wages being higher down south yet most bills/petrol/groceries/etc are the same price.

the point im getting at is you would imagine teams like arsenal and chelsea to get a higher fan to subscriber ratio than northern teams

the reason I said that the club should look into it was for the clubs fans who live farther afield like in Australia, America, and Argentina where they may not be able to get the same sort of channels that we get here. This will allow Man City fans in those countries to see our games when and if they can get it in those countries.

Now that the younger players will be playing in the NextGen tournanment it would be nice to see them play when they play away.If we owned our own T.V. channel that would be possible.
