Following on from gandy's suggestion, here's a thread where you can vote/comment. The poll will close in 7 days.
What coaching qualities does he have ? What coaching qualifications does he have ? What evidence is there that he has the necessary skills & attributes to become a coach ? Why would we pay him to be a professional coach. Coaching is a skill not a job for players that are no longer good enough for the first team who for sentimental reasons fan can't bear to see leave.
Wes will add experience and help our younger midfield players. If Ruddy and Martin are worth a contract,Wes definitely is
I know that Wes is completely settled in Norfolk and has built up a substantial property portfolio locally which he intends to expand when he retires. I do not think that he has any intention of working in football when he has to retire and assume that he will just see out his contract and then give up the professional game.
Have to say, he deserves that final year, and if he then bows out, fair play to him for what he's done. I'm happy that the youngsters we have in that position seem capable enough.here's hoping we can fill the areas where that's maybe not the case.
I voted, but the whole thing is academic at the moment. Depends who the new coach is and what he wants from our squad. Suppose he's (WH) deemed surplus to requirements - and a few days before the window shuts somebody offers proper money for Pritchard or Maddison? SW may well need that money to buy a decent defender (hell's teeth, we haven't had many in the last 3 or 4 years ) so Wessi may have a lifeline as a player for another year? And, sentimental head on for once, who could begrudge the little fella a well earned testimonial season after the service he's given us?
Well guys, I have to say that I'm VERY impressed with the replies and the reasons given. I have to say Cromer that your scenario of a last minute bid coming in for AP could really 'put the cat among the pigeons' as far as our 'No 10' is concerned. (Apologies if I'm not making much sense, but I've just discovered Posip Grosic!!). Keep voting those who haven't done so.
Keep him - his experience is useful and in a long season he'll get some games. Pritchard (if he stays) and Maddison must be starters ahead of Wes next season though.
He's not getting any younger, is settled in the area, is revered by most of the fans and deserves a testimonial. He might not like playing third fiddle I suppose but would he want all the hassle and upheaval of moving at his age ?
Wes is definitely good enough for another season. If it wasn't for Pritchard and Maddison there would be no debate about this. As OCF suggested, we'll probably see less of him though. I wish we were arguing over an abundance of defenders like this too.
Look Hoolahan's been great for us in the past, but he's no different to any other player. He deserves nothing extra i.e. to be above moving on, another season, a testimonial season, a cushy job as a coach etc, etc. With a smaller squad we can't carry anyone, we need players who can play 3 times a week if necessary, he can't. So we have 3 players who play very similar roles WH, AP & JM, Webber has already indicated that he doesn't see a role for all 3, so one has got to go. That decision should be made with the head not the heart. So for me if one of the 3 has to go, it should be Hoolahan.
I thought we'd already covered this! I didn't say he should be treated any differently, and actually agreed that the younger ones were the future. If what 1950 says is true, he'll see out his contract then retire. That contract includes next season, and I don't doubt for a moment that he'll be included in the squad.
Ain't that the truth?? And if we were, not only would we be in the play-offs, we could even have stayed in the PL!!! GRRR8 post canario.
