The most upsetting thing about watching Charlton having to prostitue itself to a sugar daddy who has less sugar than found in a diabetics cops of tea, is that we kinda deserve this. Not me. But some of us. I was happy watching Charlton when we were the honest to God 'underdogs' even in 1973 or whenever it was, when we were in the old third, the fans were a right laugh, they had this gallows humour and whilst it was not a case of knowing your place, it was a case of knowing your limits. We knew our limits. Somewhere we lost our way. I think it was when the Valley Party outgrew itself and when the good left and those that remained saw a chance to get their cardigans on telly and morphed itself into this left wing, thermoflask revolutionaries. I was delighted to be in the premier league. we were holding our own, we looked a comfortable PL side and then it started....."the next caller on bbc 606 is Henry from Tunbridge Wells complaining about Alan Curbishley" Most sane cafc supporter thought this was a joke, it wasn't, then it was followed up by 'the Valley express' the stupidest idea since JFK purchased a convertible. We fill the Valley full of Medway/Epsom twats who ride in for a quid and they are still here. They drink Bovril by the gallon and moan like a granny at a disco. We then get a perfectly acceptable Board of Directors in Slater and Jiminez who Henry and his fellow walking Andrexes cop an attitude towards. They like Curbs before them get hounded out of their positions and we get Dr Frankenstein and his bit on the side. The worst thing about cafc now, is that we (not me or my kind mind you) contributed to our downfall. If some had kept their mouths shut and realised that Curbs was as good as it gets, and that a few empty seats is better than a thousand plastics supporters with raging halitosis.
It's generally accepted by the media and curbs own brother that he became increasing incensed at the ****ers in the crowd that felt he was unable to take us to the next level. There is still some articles still around on the net that support this. Not many managers leave a job at their peak to go visit their sister...... Also Murray was being a prick and felt that he could get a cheaper option...... Perhaps, it's easiers for some if they deny their role in all this......
It's accepted by the media but the media are wrong, they should read Curbs' book and find out the truth. It's a shame that the lie about fans hounding him out is becoming accepted even by some Charlton fans. OK so his brother phoned 606 to defend him, Curbs found that quite amusing, but I was at his last home game and saw the emotional farewell from the fans, and don't see any reason to disbelieve Curbs' version of events.
Curbs is too much of a gentleman to say how badly he was treated by the fans particularly to the core of people buying his book. The real story lays with him, Murray, and a section of supporters. Some people forget how they booed him, some forget how many wanted Gritt to be no 1 rather than Curbs. I was also at his farewell game and there was a real sense of 'fack the lot of you' in his speech as well.
I didn't hear that in his speech. I think he'd had enough of the hassle of trying to get a midfield to perform. First he had the Parker business, then Danny Murphy threw his toys out when England didn't select him, then Rommedahl decided after the Palace goal he'd had enough, Smertin walked out with a year to go on his 2-year loan, Ambrose kept going AWOL in the middle of the game, and there were those idiots who criticised him for playing Kishishev every game. In the end he couldn't solve the midfield problems. Pity he wasn't given the money Dowie was.
i bought his book and went to get it signed by him at the club shop. i asked him "please come back one day once dowie has finished f'ing us up?". he said "not a chance". i think at the time he was worn out.
It was a bloody cheek of Fergie to present him with the ticket to New Zealand at Old Trafford. It was Richard Murray who paid for it,
I think curbs frustrations lied more with Murray not backing him as much as he would have liked, especially considering the work he did on a tight budget. I'd say it was a 2% of our fans who wanted curbs out. Sadly they made for better phone calls than the 98% wishing to praise him.
I think we have the 10% club. A hideous bunch of social misfits that wouldn't be happy if we swapped teams with Chelsea and offered free bovril. They make supporting charlton about as pleasurable as getting a rub down from Susan Boyle. I am a firm believer in the 'want of a nail' argument. They contributed to our downfall and continue to do so. They tarnish the memory of the Valley Party. Can you imagine this lot organising a successful political campaign?.. The Supporter Truss spent months trying to get an audience with Roland and Katrien and the only demand they make is more Bovril in the East stand!!! They are as limp wristed as they are ineffective and that ineffectiveness is what Roland feeds on, he knows that to throw them the odd crumb they will unzip their flies faster than his own chief executive. all the time the supporters truss claim to represent the fans, then the real fans suffer. Give it up Barbie Razil your so out your depth here that you will drown in a puddle.
Then Murray handing Dowie millions to squander was adding insult to injury in a big way, especially when you consider that Curbs was one of the most honest men in football, and Dowie came to Charlton on a lie.
Talk about what goes around comes around, Murray thought he had Jordan in his pocket on that one. What arrogance and stupidity. We even had to pay damages for Dowie. Jordan must be still laughing at us now. If you look back we really messed up big time. I would take Roland over Muzza any day.
It feels like we are a carcass lying in the desert, Rd came along and put the decaying carcass in the prime spot to be picked and eaten from. We are worse than before he came along, when and how will this end.
WEll we're in luck, we've got them both now. Jordan actually had to pay Murray over Dowie, because it was proved that Billy Davies was offered the job and turned it down AFTER Dowie left to be nearer his family. Then Murray thought he'd pull a fast one on Jordan by signing Dowie.
CAFC are a useful example now of 'be careful what you wish for'. What a sad sight the Valley was on Saturday.
Horrible, Nick. What a miserable day it was - and sadly, I think there will be more days like that this season.
I could deal with the Murray demise - he was looking to sell and wasn't willing to put more money in after the Dowie/Pardew debacle. Slater and Jiminez I thought did a decent job. The money man pulled out, but they did the bare essentials to keep us alive. But this is a man who is worth half a billion. He just has no desire to see us do anything - the fact it's 4pm on transfer deadline day and not a sniff of us signing anyone just shows we are being taken for mugs. Again.
