Up until COVID restrictions the fans were giving him a hard time and his form dropped accordingly, during lockdown with no fans his confidence grew and was outstanding which he took into the Euro competition, perhaps in future the fans should think hard before getting on the back of players but support them and see them through bad patches especially as it’s a young squad ,give them a chance and support and encourage them
I think if fans were patient with him and supported him through the tough times then he would... still be buggering off to a better club and bigger pay check
I think the message is get behind your players and support them if you want them to improve. A negative reaction does not help a player in any way at all.
Just my opinion but Vestergaard is an average centre back. He has good games and he has bad games on a fairly equal spread. He rarely had great games that made the difference between holding on to a winning position or dropping points, but he regularly made mistakes that led to goals being conceded or chances being created. For me the early signs are that Salisu will be better. Hope that doesn’t curse him.
I think you had the “fans were giving him hard time” & “form dropped” the wrong way round. He was pretty much pants from Day1 (Cardiff iirc) & for quite a while until his purple patch. At a club the size of Saints, fans adulation means nothing (virtually) to these players. It’s first & foremost a means to a financial end. Ps. I do agree reference “giving support through bad patches” but I don’t feel the fans were that bad to him during those first few months.
People vastly overestimate how bad we are to players, I’d say we are more tolerant than most considering that Saints have arguably been the worst value for money home side in England over roughly the last 4 years. Also Vestergaard would have left no matter what.
He was given a hard time because of the losses of concentration he was prone to when not under pressure or getting himself out of position to try to make a tackle he was never going to make and the ball by passed him by. Not our worst defender but not our best. We got a good price for him. So lets move on. Thanks Jannick for your service and good luck for the future except when playing the Saints as I want you to have a nightmare.
Also can we put to bed all this nonsense about his euros ? If not for the horrible event on game day 1 he would not have started a game. He was their third choice centre back and got in when they changed system after the loss of their star player. And he was pretty much the first player hooked when they needed to attack more I’m not sure what competition some people were watching... And given all that - there are people out there salivating over the guy palace signed - fourth choice, relegated with Fulham and couldn’t get in a Denmark side ahead of a woefully out of form Vestergaard Perhaps that was an oversight by the manager of Denmark. Or perhaps his passes in addition to the wing back shift was a key part of their system change. But I am not so sure.
I probably didn’t word it correctly but my point is he improved when fans were not there to get on his back ,we will always be a selling club so surely it’s best to improve a player and get behind him,get good service from him then sell him for a good profit, win win for me
He was like every player, he took a while to settle in and find his feet and his place in the side, build a partnership with a decent guy rather than the ass Hoedt. When he did he was very good on his day and was excellent for us last year. Wasn’t able to win or control games single handedly but what should we expect. Never heard of him when he arrived but he leaves with a good reputation in the premier league so he must have done a decent job for us.
All this proves is how out of touch I am. I have little idea who has left, stayed or joined. Must pay more attention
I really hope that is not the case Archers. I feel similar and I have become jaded with all the nonsense, media drivel and endless twitter crap but I enjoy this forum and can't ignore what is going on with Saints, even if I wanted to. I have spent far more time at my allotment and discovered that talking to beetroot and winter squash plants far more engaging than reading the endless football garbage on the Internet. Stick around Archers....we need you here.
